India endured a day to forget at the IBC Men's World Boxing Championship 2023 on Monday, May 8. Naveen Kumar, debutant Sachin Siwach and Govind Kumar Sahani were in action on Day 8 of the event.
Siwach was up against Novac Serghei of Moldova in the Round of 32, while Naveen squared off against Emmanuel Reyes of Spain in the Round of 16. Meanwhile, India’s premier pugilist Sahani fought Sakhil Alakhverdovi of Georgia in the Round of 16.
Siwach provided a proper hammering to Novac in the Round of 32 bouts and started his campaign with a bang. He remained composed throughout the fight and threw in some heavy punches toward his opponent.
He defended himself against Sakhil with fantastic agility. The Moldovian boxer didn’t get a chance against him and eventually lost the fight by a unanimous decision of 5-0.
In the second match of the day, Naveen was up against Reyes of Spain in the 92 kg category. It was a match to forget for the Indian pugilist as the Spaniard made a mockery of his opponent by defeating the Indian with a unanimous decision of 5-0.
Reyes went hard on Naveen from the very start and continued to show dominance throughout. With this win, he proceeded to the semi-finals, while the Indian boxer bowed out of the event.
Next up was Govind Kumar Sahani, who took on Sakhil Alakhverdovi of Georgia in a Round of 16 match in the 48kg category. This might have been the biggest upset of the day in the competition as Govind Kumar made his way up to this point thanks to plenty of hard work.
Sakhil was just too good for him in the pre-quarters of the event. As a result, India suffered another loss in the Men's World Boxing Championship 2023, with Govind Kumar losing by a unanimous decision of 5-0.
