Rio Olympics 2016: The Indian Boxing Council to seek a wildcard entry for MC Mary Kom

In an attempt to bolster its flagging contingent to Rio 2016, the Indian Boxing Council have decided to seek a wild card entry to allow 2012 Olympic bronze medalist MC Mary Kom take part in the Summer Games, slated to begun in just over 2 months time.

The 33-year-old had failed to make the cut for Rio 2016 last month, when she was eliminated in the second round of the competition, after losing to Azize Nimani of Germany in the final Olympic qualification event in Asthana, Kazakhstan, dashing many hopes of a possible medal at Rio De Janerio.

There was a glimmer of hope of her qualification, provided a few results went her way, but those too were shattered when in the quarterfinal stage of the Lin Yu-Ting went down to reigning Olympic champion Nicola Adams.

Another contender for a Rio 2016 berth- Sarita Devi-also bowed out early in the same event. So far, only Shiva Thapa has booked the quota for Rio 2016 in the 75kg category.
