Agartala - The North Eastern Council (NEC) on Tuesday announced a cash reward of Rs.40 lakh for Olympic bronze medal winner M.C. Mary Kom.

NEC director Sherry Lalthangzo said: “As an endeavour of supporting and recognizing the excellent sportpersons from the northeast, the NEC has decided to award M.C. Mary Kom.”

The award will be formally handed over Mary Kom in the Manipur capital Imphal on Sep 16.

Mary Kom, who hails from Manipur, became India’s first woman boxer to win an Olympic medal. She won the bronze in the 51 kg category.

The Manipur government have also announced Rs.50 lakh for Mary Kom.

The state government said Mary Kom would also be given two acres of land at Meitei Langol village on the outskirts of Imphal.

She will also be promoted to the rank of additional superintendent of police.
