Shiva Thapa climbs up to world number two in AIBA rankings

Shiva Thapa is the third Indian to win a medal at the World Championship

Indian boxer Shiva Thapa reached a career high second spot in international rankings, after winning a bronze medal last month at the World Championships, Doha. Irishman Michael Conlan is ranked first.

The 21-year-old climbed up five places in the 56kg category and secured the second spot with 1550 points. After Vijender Singh and Vikas Krishnan, Thapa became the third Indian to ever win a medal at this coveted event. Both Singh and Krishnan had won bronze medals in 2009 and 2011 respectively.

This young boxer from Assam was initially drawn towards Karate, athletics and football. After watching Mike Tyson on television, he decided to take up boxing seriously.Shiva Thapa made a grand entry to international boxing by becoming the youngest Indin to represent India at the London Olympics Games, 2012

He is also the first Indian to be signed by a foreign franchise in World Series Boxing, USA. Thapa is the youngest to clinch champion’s title twice in Asian Games.

Asian Championship silver-medallist Vikas Krishnan was placed at the sixth spot in this Doha event, after losing in the quarterfinals. Another quarterfinalist, Satish Kumar finished at number seven in super heavyweight boxers category.

Injury came as a blow for some Indian boxers, L Devendro Singh, the Manipuri youngster, finished at 13th spot in the 49 kgs category with total 550 points. Unfortunately he suffered a cut above his right eye and lost the second round. Sumit Sangwan, former gold-medallist at the Asian Championship, was also troubled by injury. He secured 450 points and the 18th position in the 81kg category.

Among other Indians, Manoj Kumar finished 18th in the light welterweight 64kg list. Gaurav Bhiduri could not continue his good run from the World Series either
