Vijender Singh kept his streak alive with a sixth straight victory

Vijender Singh has what it takes to become a World Champion if he continues to stay as disciplined and focussed as he has been so far, according to trainer Lee Beard. Beard has worked with the likes of Floyd Mayweather Sr and is well known for his work as an assistant to former WBA champion, Ricky Hatton.

“I have trained a lot of boxers but his talent is outstanding from others. He has all the skills to be a world champion,” the British boxing trainer said.

The Indian boxing sensation registered a sixth pro boxing fight win in a row on Friday, defeating Poland’s Andrzej Soldra within a minute into the third round, keeping his outstanding winning streak alive.

The fight was Vijender’s first eight round match and the dominating win should act as a confidence booster ahead of his bout for the Wold Boxing Organization (WBO) Asia title. “If you take into consideration, he only boxed two weeks ago, it was a great performance, it’s difficult to fight so close like that in the profession ranks,” felt his 41-year-old trainer.

The six-foot boxer from Haryana has won all six of his pro boxing fights through technical knockouts.

Highlighting Singh’s strengths, Beard said “I think Vijender is moving at a rapid pace, he’s highly skilled and strong with world-class power. But he has the ability to outsmart his opponents and he is able to make the vital adjustments needed to win big fights. I think he’ll be a world champion if he stays disciplined and focussed.”

“His power is a big factor but he has a tremendous jab and he uses that real well,” he added.

The WBO Asia title bout will be held in the boxing star’s hometown, New Delhi in July, and Vijender is relishing the chance to win the title in front of home fans. "It's going to be a huge change for Indian sports." he said while speaking to BoxNation. "This kind of event is new style, it's a new era. There's lots of cricket in India, but there's not been pro boxing.”

“We're expecting a really good fight in Delhi; lots of people are excited and I'm excited! It's going to be great," the 30-year-old boxer added.
