World boxing championships Day 7 : Indian boxers close in on Olympic berths

Day 7 in totality was a good day for the Indian boxers in the world boxing championships at Baku, Azerbaijan. There were 4 Indian boxers who were competing at day 7 in round of 32. First it was the bout of our very own ‘Chota Tyson’ Suranjoy Singh Mayengbam but it ended in disappointment for him as he lost to world no 9 Tugstsogt NYAMBAYAR of Mongolia. The Indian boxer was up 13-12 at the end of round 2 but the Mongolian dominated the 3rd round as he took 5 points in comparison to 1 of Suranjoy, making the final score 17-14.

Then it was the turn of CWG gold medalist Manoj Kumar in the 64 kg wt category to face world no 4 boxer of Ireland Moylette Raymond. Manoj Kumar dominated the match from the very 1st round as he took a comprehensive lead at the end of round 1 and maintained it after end of round 2 and didn’t give any chance to a much higher ranked opponent in the third round, in the end it was Manoj prevailed over the Irishman 17-9.

Then in the 81 kg category, Dinesh Kumar was up against a lower ranked Draskovic Bosco. It was an easy bout for the Indian as the referee had to stop the contest in round 3, as bosco was repeatedly hitting dinesh below the belt, hence he was disqualified which sent Dinesh one more step closer to an Olympic berth.

Lastly Asian Games gold medalist Vikas Krishnan was up against world no.9 Nurudzinau Mahamed of Bulgaria, in the 69 kg wt category. Both the fighters were giving their best and due to this the scores were 8-8 after the end of round 2. Same was repeated in round 3 as the scores were once again tied at 10-10 after the end of round 3. But the judges declared the Indian boxer as winner on the basis of his performance.

All these 3 boxers are just one step away from getting the Olympic quota, round of 16 matches will take place on 4th oct 2011.
