Hubert Davis has coached the North Carolina Tar Heels for four seasons. It has been a roller-coaster ride with some seasons hitting highs, but also a few with lows. The highlight of his tenure came in his first year, leading the Tar Heels to the National Championship game in 2022. However, the next season, as preseason favorites, they did not qualify for the tournament.
The team has been subpar since then. On Thursday, a new episode of "Eye on College Basketball" was streamed on YouTube. In the episode, analyst Matt Norlander broke down the career of Hubert Davis and why he thinks he could be on the hot seat next season.
"Overall, Hubert Davis has one of the more interesting coaching journeys of the past 10-15 years," Norlander said (Timestamp 9:40). "Year one, title game after some regular season up and downs. Then you're the preseason number one, you don't make the tournament. You become the first program ever to be preseason number one and not even make the NCAA tournament."
"Last year, they were a one seed, made the Sweet 16, got bounced. Quality season overall, came up a little bit short. (This year) they squeak into the tournament, controversially so, they get beaten by Ole Miss in the first round."
Norlander continued by talking about how Davis' job could be in jeopardy next season.
"He goes into next season on the hot seat," Norlander said. "It hasn't been a disaster. It hasn't been an outright success but Carolina fans aren't going to stand for this amount of turbulence on a year to year basis."
North Carolina's 2025 recruiting will be crucial to Hubert Davis keeping his job
If it is true that Hubert Davis is on the hot seat in North Carolina, he will be relying on his recruiting class to help him keep his job. Fortunately for him, the Tar Heels put together a strong recruiting class that includes one of the top recruits in the nation.
Hubert Davis was able to successfully sign No. 8-ranked recruit, according to 247Sports, Caleb Wilson, to the Tar Heels. Wilson is expected to make an immediate impact next season and could help elevate the Tar Heels to a deep NCAA Tournament run.
Davis also signed two four-star recruits, No. 45-ranked Derek Dixon and No. 53-ranked Isaiah Denis. They will be joined by five transfers on a team that experienced a lot of turnover this offseason.
