No, unfortunately for Dayton fans, Koby Brea is not returning to the Flyers for next season. On April 16, the same day Dayton signed Ohio State transfer Zed Key, Brea announced his decision to enter the transfer portal on social media.
“As a 17-year-old from New York City, being accepted onto the grounds of the University of Dayton, I was greeted by a community whose embrace felt like home, a warmth that will stay with me forever," Brea said.
"Through the highs and lows, the victories and defeats, Dayton became more than just a place, university, or a team; it became a part of who I am.
“With that, it is with a heavy heart, that I have made the decision to enter the transfer portal. ... But no matter where life takes me, my bond with Dayton, with Flyer Nation, will remain unbreakable. I’m a Flyer forever!”
Koby Brea's transfer status
As of Monday, Koby Brea has reportedly received offers from Kansas, Duke, North Carolina, UConn and Kentucky. The fifth-year senior guard is ranked No. 13 in the transfer portal and is known for his shooting prowess, especially from the deep.
According to ESPN's Jeff Borzello, Brea has already met with the five finalists via Zoom and will be making an official school visit to Kentucky soon.
The Wildcats, now under Mark Pope, seem like a great option for Koby Brea, as the coach was known for his offense-based attack during his time at BYU. The guard won his second A10 Sixth Man of the Year title this season and at Kentucky, he would be able to move into the starting line-up, given his longer college experience and shooting skills.
In his senior season with the Flyers, the guard started in four games and averaged 11.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists while shooting 51.2% from the field. He made 100-of-201 shots from the 3-point line.
The Athletic's C.J. Moore called Brea a player with a ton of interest from teams and pointed out how can knock down shots on a big stage evident with his five 3-pointers and later 14 points, including four 3s during Flyers' March Madness run.
But Moore raised one big concern about Koby Brea:
"If he transfers to a higher level, he could be a guy teams hunt on the defensive end. He isn’t a great on-ball defender. He has good positional size but has a tendency to give up blow-by straight-line drives. Still, his shooting is valuable enough that just about anyone will take him because he changes the geometry of the floor.”
