LSU's coach, Kim Mulkey, will be in Los Angeles on Thursday, throwing the first pitch at the Volts vs Bandits game. The Athletes Unlimited Softball League game will commence at 6 p.m. ET at McMurry Park, Sulphur.
It is a prestigious honor reserved for the most renowned personalities in the sports and entertainment world. Bill Murray, Billie Jean King (tennis legend), Chris Mosier (triathlete) and Abby Wambach (soccer) are some of the big names presented with the same honor in the past.
With that, LSU's Instagram handle and AUSL updated the fans about Mulkey's upcoming stint through a post on Tuesday.
"🏀 🤝 🥎 @lsuwbkb Head Coach, @coachkimmulkey is throwing out the first pitch in Sulphur, LA this Thursday! tickets are available at the link in our bio 🎟️," the post read.
Kim Mulkey is best known for her coaching stints with Baylor and the LSU Tigers. She posted a 632-104 winning record (85.9%) with the Bears, leading them to 19 NCAA tournament appearances and three national titles. She joined the Tigers in 2021 and led the school to its first championship in 2023.
Nevertheless, Mulkey has plenty of experience pitching. She indulged in softball growing up and played a year of Dixie Youth baseball when she was 12, followed by two years of Pony League before high school. Her daughter, Makenzie, played softball for Baylor, and her son, Kramer, is a professional baseball player.
Kim Mulkey was once ejected after throwing the first pitch
The Volts vs Bandits game won't be Kim Mulkey's first pitch. The Savannah Bananas invited the LSU coach to inaugurate one of their three games at the Alex Box Stadium last year.
The umpire declared Mulkey had thrown a ball, whereas she argued that it was a strike. The back and forth soon became a yelling contest, with the coach walking towards the batter and intimidating the referee.
She also kicked the ground to indicate she was throwing dirt at the call. Mulkey was immediately ejected, with the fans booing the turn of events.
As an animated Kim Mulkey walked towards the dugout, the umpire held her hand and revealed that it was a prank on the fans.
