Robbie Avila's last season as an Indiana State Sycamore was 2023–24. The Mexican-descent player, who was named First Team All-MVC this season, announced on Saturday that he will be joining former Sycamores head coach Josh Schertz at the University of Saint Louis.

Robbie Avila drew the attention of the national media during this year's March Madness both due to his playing style and his unique appearance on the court while wearing protective eye gear.

Avila started 37 games this past season in his sophomore year, averaging 17.4 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game.

While the Sycamores did not participate in the 2024 NCAA Tournament, they did advance to the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) title game. The Sycamores made their first NIT title game appearance in program history; however, they lost to the Seton Hall Pirates.

Top Robbie Avila Nicknames during March Madness 2024

#1: College Jokic

This one stems from the similarities of Avila's play style and that of the NBA star. Avila posted 11 games with 20 points or more, 12 games with five assists or more, and six games with 10 rebounds or more during the regular season.

#2: Cream Abdul-Jabbar

This might be the funniest out of the bunch, given the similar looks shared by Avila and the legendary UCLA star.

Both players sported similar eyewear during their college playing days, although Robbie Avila is far from the heights achieved by the three-time NCAA champion.

#3: Larry Nerd

There's a trend of comparing Robbie Avila to players who are considered legends of the game, or at least in the case of Jokic, who is considered one of the best players in the NBA currently.

The comparison to Larry Bird makes sense, considering Avila is the most significant player to come out of Indiana State since the Boston Celtics legend played there in the late 1970s. The nerdy part is just a pun on Avila's use of goggles. A bit uninspired, if you ask us.

#4: Stepth Blurry

The weakest of the bunch, given that there's almost no connection between the two players, Steph Curry and Avila,. The former Indiana star is not a great three-pointer, which is what stands out the most in Curry's game. Blurry curry is a much better choice, too.
