The Heisman Trophy is the most-priced possession for a college football athlete. While teams compete for the National title, individual athletes battle it out all year long to get their hands on the most coveted trophy. Being the highest individual honor, the award comes with a lot of merit.

With thousands of athletes to pick from, the award is narrowed down to one individual for their brilliance throughout the year.

Established in 1935, the award has been around for years. However, in its long duration, only one football player has managed to bag the trophy more than once. This record too came in the 70s.

Ohio State’s legendary running back Archie Griffin holds this honor in the football world. Having played for the Buckeyes from 1972 to 1975, Griffin won this award during his junior and senior seasons.

The legendary running back still holds this record. Though some have come close, no one has matched him yet. A force for the Buckeyes, Griffin scored 27 touchdowns in his college career. He came close to winning the trophy even in his sophomore season when he finished fifth in the Heisman rankings.

Determined to win it, he came back in his junior season, recording his best year as a Buckeye. In his junior year, Griffin had 12 touchdowns, and he ran for close to 1,700 yards. After an outstanding senior season too, he won the award in back-to-back years.

During his time at Ohio State, the Buckeyes won the Big10 Title in all four seasons.

While Griffin holds the record, some have come close to matching him. However, this is quite an ask as freshmen and sophomores generally don’t find themselves in the Heisman competition.

Caleb Williams is chasing Heisman Trophy history

However, Caleb Williams finds himself in the mix to match the legendary Griffin. The sophomore transfer quarterback to USC had an outstanding season for the Trojans.

Which college football team has the most Heisman Trophy wins?

Leading them from the front, Williams was the Heisman Trophy winner for 2022. Returning to the Southern California Campus, Williams will look to defend his crown. Tipped to be the No.1 draft pick for 2024, Williams is most likely to have a run at the prized trophy for another year.

If the superstar quarterback manages to steer clear of injury, the 2023 season could be a remarkable one. This could be the closest someone has come to repeating Archie Griffin’s historical 1974-75 run.

As the Trojans prepare for another successful campaign, they will look to Williams as their guy. Williams too will be looking to double up himself and rub shoulders with the legendary running back.
