Bill Belichick will coach North Carolina in 2025, replacing Mack Brown. The six-time Super Bowl champion takes over a Tar Heels program coming off a disappointing stretch under Brown.
Speaking on his SEC Network show on Monday, veteran journalist Paul Finebaum said Belichick can push North Carolina to a solid debut season.
"I think Belichick has the potential to be good," Finebaum said, per Athlon Sports. "Part of the reason that I say that, I don't think the schedule is that difficult. I think he can get to seven or eight wins, which would be a good start."

North Carolina plays one of the ACC’s softer schedules, with most key games at home. The Tar Heels leave the state only three times, facing weaker opponents in California and at UCF. ESPN’s Football Power Index projects 6.7 wins and a ninth-place ACC finish.
Finebaum also pointed to possible off-field distractions tied to Belichick’s relationship with Jordon Hudson and said former UNC coach Mack Brown should have been replaced earlier.
Bill Belichick could return to the NFL
Bill Belichick faces scrutiny over his relationship with Jordon Hudson, whose influence on his interviews and football decisions has raised concern. There have been emails sent to UNC’s administration, including a warning from one fan that Hudson could damage the team’s reputation, according to reports. The university has downplayed the issue, but questions remain as the season approaches.
Belichick signed a five-year, $50 million deal in December. His buyout has reportedly dropped from $10 million to $1 million.
Meanwhile, speculation continues about a potential NFL return in 2026, depending on his UNC performance. ProFootballTalk creator Mike Florio has said the Tampa Bay Buccaneers could pursue Belichick if they struggle in 2025, citing earlier links between the coach and the team.
North Carolina opens the 2025 season against TCU (Aug. 30), then travels to Charlotte (Sept. 6). The Tar Heels host Richmond (Sept. 13) before heading to UCF (Sept. 20).
