Quarterback prospect Bryce Underwood grabbed headlines last week when he flipped his commitment from beleaguered coach Brian Kelly's LSU Tigers to the Michigan Wolverines. Underwood is the No. 1 ranked, five-star prospect in the class of 2025 according to ESPN.

The story of how Underwood was flipped involves Michigan superfan, the $150 million worth Dave Portnoy (as per Celebrity Net Worth) who had earlier promised to recruit an elite prospect for the Wolverines.

During an appearance on "The Barstool College Show" on Tuesday, Portnoy revealed how a conversation with Michigan alumni Jolin Ellison, the partner of the second richest man in the world, the $232 billion worth Larry Ellison (as per Forbes) resulted in Michigan flipping Bryce Underwood.

“I got a call from the Michigan football team,” Portnoy said. “They said, ‘Hey, there’s this donor who wants to talk to you.’ I said I’m doing this [landing Underwood] by myself, and I don’t need to talk to anybody. And they said, ‘Please, this woman is a big fan of Barstool and you; she’d love to talk to you.
"Her name is Jolin.’ … They said, ‘Oh, her husband is a guy by the name of Larry Ellison. Have you ever heard of him?’ Oh, Larry Ellison? Like, the No. 2 richest guy on the planet? Yeah, I’ll take that phone call.”

Bryce Underwood flipped by Michigan big gun

According to CBS Sports, Bryce Underwood was convinced to flip his commitment to Michigan by a Wolverines big hitter. Michigan alumni and NFL legend Tom Brady reportedly cultivated a relationship with the quarterback prospect and promised to mentor him which finally pushed him over the edge.

While Brady played a big part in convincing Underwood to join, according to a report by CBS Sports analyst Richard Johnson, the financial outlay for his signature was also massive.

"The website On3 initially reported a figure for Underwood may near $5 million, but multiple conversations CBS Sports and 247Sports have had with sources across the industry paint the real number to be something closer to double that (over the course of several seasons)," Johnson wrote in his column. "There should be no surprise at the high cost of doing business in the NIL era with a highly-touted prospect."

The Michigan Wolverines have had issues with the quarterback room this season with coach Sherrone Moore switching between Alex Orji and Davis Warren to no effect and Bryce Underwood will give the first-year coach a boost in his bid to replace J.J McCarthy.
