WATCH: Alabama HC Kalen DeBoer keeps Nick Saban's A-Day tradition going by offering squad steak or beans and hotdogs dinner

Kalen DeBoer has kept a tradition that was started by his predecessor, Nick Saban.

After the Alabama Crimson Tide played their spring game on Saturday, DeBoer treated the winning White team, representing the offense, to a streak dinner, while the losing Crimson side, representing the defense, had a meal of pork and beans.

The tradition stems from the former Alabama coach referring to the A-Day as:

“A steak and beans game.”

According to the tradition, the team that wins the A-Game is treated to a gourmet steak dinner, with waiter service, in a generally posh affair. However, the team that loses is left with the less glamorous meal of pork and beans

This tradition turns what is generally a meaningless game into something that the players can be motivated to win, which, in turn, raises the level of performance.

"Being the commissioner, I usually can manipulate my way to whichever side of the room I like," Saban said. "(And) even though pork and beans are a (personal) favorite, these have never been my favorite.”

Some thought that after Saban retired that the tradition would be gone.

But DeBoer, after listening to the senior players (something he has been doing since he arrived in Tuscaloosa), decided to keep the incredibly popular tradition going.

Can Kalen DeBoer and Alabama win the SEC in 2024?

Kalen DeBoer's arrival in Tuscaloosa occurred at the same time as an exodus of talent and prospects from the Crimson Tide program after Nick Saban's retirement.

However, even with some big names departing to many of Alabama's rivals, they still have many of the team that helped the Crimson Tide win the Southeastern Conference championship last season, including quarterback Jalen Milroe.

But while this may give the Crimson Tide some hope that they can retain their title, their main rivals, the Georgia Bulldogs, have also become stronger, and nowadays the Bulldogs are generally seen as the top team in the SEC.

The threat will not only come from Georgia but from one of the SEC's new members, the Texas Longhorns. After a strong final season in the Big 12 in which they won the conference championship on their way to the College Football Playoff, the Longhorns have been able to keep many of their strong roster for their inaugural SEC season and could launch a challenge for Kalen DeBoer and Alabama.
