The LSU Tigers and Vanderbilt Commodores met in Week 13 of the college football season, and the fans directed chants at Tigers head coach Brian Kelly.
Before the game, Kelly and his team were greeted with chants of "Fire Kelly." The whole stadium demanded that the Tigers' front office discard the veteran head coach.
The chant was done before the game, so it could either discourage Kelly and his players or inspire them to swat aside the Commodores. As it turned out, LSU beat Vanderbilt 24-17 to ease some pressure off Kelly.
The LSU Tigers are having their worst season under Brian Kelly
The LSU Tigers are one of the storied franchises in college football history. The team has enjoyed multiple winning seasons, and they've sent so many players to the NFL over the years.
The Tigers hired Brian Kelly ahead of the 2022 season, and it's never been this rocky under the two-time AP College Football Coach of the Year. The 2024 season has been a test of patience, as the Tigers entered Week 13 with a 6-4 record.
To compound the Tigers' woes, they're currently on a three-game losing streak, dropping games against the Texas A&M Aggies, Alabama Crimson Tide, and Florida Gators. The Florida Gators' loss was particularly disappointing as the Gators, too, are having a tough season. The win against the Tigers was arguably the year's biggest highlight as a Gators fan.
This season's performance is in stark contrast to the first two seasons of Brian Kelly's experience. The LSU Tigers went 10-4 in 2022 and 10-3 in 2023. This season, the team is projected to finish with less than nine wins in the regular season for the first time since Ed Orgeron's tenure.
Following the season, Brian Kelly will need to regroup and figure out how to address the Tigers' defensive issues. They have cost them too many times this season, and if he's not careful, they could cost him his job.
