On January 25, 2004, the 1st ODI of the West Indies tour of South Africa was played at Cape Town. South Africa won the toss and decided to bat first. Graeme Smith (53 off 74 balls), Jacques Kallis (109* off 94 balls) and Jacques Rudolph's (61* off 76 balls) responsible knocks led South Africa to score 263 runs for 4 wickets.

In reply, West Indies suffered an early blow, losing Chris Gayle (4 off 15 balls) in the fifth over of their inning. After that wicket of Gayle, Andre Nel dismissed West Indies skipper Brian Lara (2 off 16 balls) in the tenth over. West Indies didn't get a chance to recover and was bombed out for 54.

Only two batsmen became able to score in double figures, Shivnarine Chanderpaul (14 off 34 balls) and Ricardo Powell (12 off 9 balls). Andre Nel took 2 wickets, while Makhaya Ntini and Lance Klusener took 3 wickets each. West Indies managed to score only 54 for 10 wickets, off just 23.2 overs. As a result, South Africa won the match by 209 runs.

Muttiah Muralitharan took 3 wickets for his side, while Chaminda Vaas destroyed team India's batting line-up single-handedly by taking 5 wickets. Sri Lanka won the 2000/01 Coca-Cola Champions Trophy by record 245 runs.
