Over the course of the last five years and more, India's opening duo has consisted of either Shikhar Dhawan or Murali Vijay or both.

For the first time since the Nagpur Test of 2012 against England will neither feature in the starting line-up at the top of the order. This after both were omitted from the squad and teenage sensation Prithvi Shaw and Karnataka run-glutton Mayank Agarwal were drafted into the side.

In a never-seen-before practice, the team management decided to unveil the final 12 players who will have a chance to form the playing XI and it was all but confirmed that Shaw will open with KL Rahul in the game starting on Thursday.

Will Shaw's arrival be the start of a new era in the pantheon of India's top order batting? Only time will tell.
