5 highest match aggregates in T20Is

McCullum conjured up some breathtaking strokes on his way to an unbeaten 116.

With each passing year, new batting records are been quashed in T20Is, and it seems as if the bat’s wrath on the ball is reaching new heights. And, considering that the World T20 takes place every second year, international teams are now taking the shortest format very seriously. With a plethora of T20 leagues having sprung up in a number of places, a T20 batsman now knows exactly what the situation demands, and the has the right skills to combat even the best of bowlers with their aggressive strokes.

Since the turn of this decade, a number of matches have been high scoring cliff-hangers, with the chasing team going out all guns blazing, even when facing the most improbable of targets. Here are five of the highest run aggregates in a T20I match:

#5 NEW ZEALAND VS AUSTRALIA, 2010MATCH AGGREGATE: 428 RUNS

The second T20 of the 2010 series featuring the two Tasmanian sides is remembered best for Brendon McCullum’s frenzied attack on the Australian bowlers enroute an unbeaten 116. Shaun Tait was taken to the cleaners, with McCullum scooping his yorkers over the keeper’s head for maximums.

In reply to 214, Michael Clarke, in the company of the more adventurous Cameron White, got the visitors within a whisker of the target. Yet, they could manage only two runs of the required three on the last ball, and the outcome had to be decided by a super over.

Tim Southee kept things tight to concede only six runs in the super over, and Martin Guptill then smote Shaun Tait over cover, to finish off the match.

#4 ENGLAND VS AUSTRALIA, 2013MATCH AGGREGATE: 457 RUNS

Aaron Finch blasted the Indian bowlers enroute a record breaking 156.

Playing only his 7th T20I, Aaron Finch pummeled the English bowlers on the way to a record-breaking 156. Favouring the leg side against pacers, and going inside out against spinners, Finch powered Australia to 247, their highest total in T20s.

In reply, the hosts couldn’t really recover from a poor start, tumbling to 42-4 after the departure of Eoin Morgan in the fifth over. A fighting 90 from Joe Root, and cameos from Bopara and Buttler gave them a faint hope, but it turned out to be of little help at the end.

#3 ENGLAND VS SOUTH AFRICA, 2016MATCH AGGREGATE: 459 RUNS

Moeen Ali took England to the finishing line in a nailbiter

This year’s edition of the World T20 saw a number of thrilling matches go right down to the wire. The group stage match between England and South Africa was a high scoring cliffhanger that ultimately went England’s way on the very last ball.

Hashim Amla and Quinton deKock gave South Africa a blazing start, before Duminy and Miller gave the final flourish to help the team reach 229, a safe total by all means.

Jason Roy, however, had other plans. He decimated the South African bowling, and Dale Steyn in particular, in an inspired innings of 43. Joe Root then came in and gave the innings shape with a blitzy 83. The English team seemed to have lost the trick in the final overs, but a calm Moeen Ali took them over the line.

Chris Gayle blasted a 44-ball 90 to give West Indies a record-breaking win

The Australia-South Africa marathon ODI (read 438) at the very same ground served as inspiration, as a rampant West Indian side chased down South Africa’s 231 to set up a world record.

Led by Chris Gayle’s 90 of just 44 balls, the tourists usurped a healthy 231 set by the South Africans, mainly on the back of Faf duPlessis’ stroke-filled 119.

The combination of Gayle and Samuels beat the life out of the chase with a huge 2nd wicket stand of 151. In all the match consisted of 44 fours and 24 sixes.

#1 INDIA VS WEST INDIES, 2016MATCH AGGREGATE: 489 RUNS
