The BCCI announced a 15-member ODI squad to take on Sri Lanka in a three-match series which begins on December 10.

Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli was handed a much-needed break ahead of the all-important South Africa tour; Rohit Sharma was named the stand-in captain.

Apart from Kohli's exclusion, the team management did not throw up any surprises.

However, there are a few cricketers who would have hoped to be given a chance but missed out.

Here are five such names:

#5 Rishabh Pant

The 20-year-old youngster made his debut for the Indian cricket team earlier this year in a T20I against England. However, he did not get a chance to make a mark for himself and he has not played for the Men in Blue since then.

He was included in the squad for the ODI series against West Indies but did not play a single game.

He is currently playing for Delhi in the Ranji Trophy but has not been in great form. Having qualified for the knockout stages, he will look to get back into his groove and the get the selectors to notice his performances.

#4 Prithvi Shaw

Mumbai has produced some exceptional batting superstars in the past and Prithvi Shaw is set to be the next big thing in Indian cricket.

The 17-year-old youngster has got a lot of heads turning with his superb batting performances at the domestic level.

He is the top run-getter for Mumbai this season so far and almost single-handedly taken them into the quarter-finals. He has scored 521 runs in 10 innings at an average of 57.88 with three centuries and two half-centuries to his name.

The ODI series against Sri Lanka would have been an ideal start to his international career but the selectors have decided to wait before giving him a chance with the national side.

#3 Mayank Agarwal

With the form he is currently in, it looks like there is nothing that can stop Mayank Agarwal from scoring runs.

He has been in sensational form in the Ranji Trophy so far, scoring 1064 runs at an average of 133. He has scored five centuries in his previous seven innings for Karnataka, including an unbeaten triple century against Maharashtra.

Agarwal had shown a lot of promise at the beginning of his first-class career but failed to live up to the hype.

Currently, the highest run-getter in the Ranji Trophy this season, Agarwal would have hoped to break into the Indian ODI side against Sri Lanka. However, with the form he is in, it looks like he will soon make his debut for the Men in Blue.

#2 Sanju Samson

Australia 'A' v India 'A' - Quadrangular Series Final

The 23-year-old was one of the prime contenders to make his ODI debut for the Men in Blue against Sri Lanka. However, the selectors chose to persist with MS Dhoni as the first choice wicketkeeper-batsman.

Samson has consistently been performing well at the domestic level, in the Ranji Trophy and in the Indian Premier League as well.

However, he has just been given one chance with the national side in a T20I against Zimbabwe in 2015.

He is currently the top-scorer for Kerala in the Ranji Trophy with 577 runs to his name in 10 innings. He will hope for the selectors to give him a chance within the next few months.

#1 Mohammad Siraj

The 23-year-old made headlines after breaking into the Indian T20I squad to take on New Zealand. He had a debut to forget as he gave away 53 runs in four overs with just one wicket to his name.

Unfortunately, he was dropped shortly after that and has not been included in the ODI squad to take on Sri Lanka.

He will hope for the selectors to give him another chance to prove himself in the upcoming T20I series against Sri Lanka.
