5 ODI Batting record charts dominated by Indians

Australia v India - Tri-Series Game 10

ODI batting has always been one of the strong points for India, with many batsmen making it big in the international arena. While there have been many great batsmen across the world, India has always been among the topmost countries when it comes to batting prowess.

Sachin Tendulkar was one of the first ones to be known as a great limited overs batsman, and many others followed suit.

While the likes of Brian Lara, Ricky Ponting, Kumar Sangakkara and others have been great batsmen worldwide, India seems to be leading the charts with a long list of batsmen worth being considered legendary.

The ODI record charts also show the same picture. Indians come on top of many batting records, the best of these are given here:

Most Batsmen to Score 10000 runs in ODIs

Before Virat Kohli, India have seen 4 legendary cricketers crossing the 10,000 run mark
Before Virat Kohli, India have seen 4 legendary cricketers crossing the 10,000 run mark

Any batsman achieving a landmark of 10000 runs in ODI cricket is a big feat for him. Even a team like England who were the oldest ones to play cricket, do not have a single batsman to have touched the mark. But when we talk about India, they have the highest number of batsmen to have achieved the feat, Five.

India have MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar as the batsmen to cross the 10000 run mark, the highest in the world. Sri Lanka are a close second with 4 such batsmen in Dilshan, Sangakkara, Jayawardene and Jayasuriya. With no other batsman from the Island country currently going strong, India’s position at the top seems secure.

India could have been having an even stronger position at the top, had the two legends, Virender Sehwag (8273 runs) and Yuvraj Singh (8701 runs) also crossed the 10000 run mark.

Fastest to 10000 ODI runs

India have all the top 3 spots in the list of batsmen fastest to 10,000 runs
India have all the top 3 spots in the list of batsmen fastest to 10,000 runs

India have been privileged in this regard as they not only had the legendary Sachin Tendulkar as the first one to ever achieve this magical number in ODIs, but also have Virat Kohli as the fastest batsman to reach the landmark in just 204 innings. Such has been India's dominance that the top three batsmen in this list are all Indians.

While Sachin’s record of being the fastest to 10000 runs in 259 innings stood for a long duration of over 17 years, with only Sourav Ganguly coming close to him, achieving the feat in 263 innings. But Virat Kohli broke the record by a big margin and now as it stands, the Top three batsmen on the list to fastest to 10000 runs are all Indians. Remarkable! Right?

Most Double hundreds in ODIs

Indians have a total of 5 ODI double hundreds to their name, more than all other countries combined!

Double hundred in an ODI was something always talked about, but nobody had achieved it in the 20th century. Many legends came and faded away, but it took over four decades for ODI cricket to see someone touching the 200 run mark, the legendary Sachin Tendulkar from India, and right from there, India’s dominance on this record chart started.

Over the next two years, two more Indians crossed the mark, Virender Sehwag with his score of 219 and Rohit Sharma with 209. At one point, it was only three Indians above the 200 run mark in the world.

While some other batsmen also crossed the 200 run barrier, like Chris Gayle from West Indies, Martin Guptill from New Zealand and Fakhar Zaman from Pakistan, Rohit Sharma alone scored a total of 3 double hundreds. So India currently have 5 double centuries to their name, considerably ahead of every other nation.

Most ODI Runs in a calendar year

The three Indian legends were on song in the latter part of the 1990s.

Another record which seems to be owned by Indian batsmen is the one to score most ODI runs in a calendar year. While over the last few years, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan have been regular names in this list for each year, the all-time list for ODIs throws some even impressive numbers for India.

The top four spots on this list are all owned by Indian legends, with Sachin (1894 runs in 1998), Ganguly (1767 runs in 1999) and Dravid (1761 runs in 1999) taking the first, second and third spots respectively. The fourth spot again goes to Sachin with 1611 runs in 1996. What makes this achievement more impressive is that these runs came before the turn of the century, when runs came at a slower rate. None of the modern day batsmen has been able to beat these numbers.

Most Centuries in ODI Cricket

Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar sit well beyond anyone else in the list of most centuries in ODI cricket.

The modern ODI cricket witnesses a lot of centuries, but the same batsman scoring a lot of centuries is still quite uncommon. ODI batting legends to have scored heaps of runs have ended up with a relatively low number of hundreds. But India have dominated this chart as well.

At the top of the table, is none other than Sachin Tendulkar, with 49 ODI centuries to his name. Sachin’s record was so huge that even the all-time greats like Ponting, Sangakkara and Inzamam could not come anywhere close to him.

It is only another Indian in Virat Kohli, who is comfortably sitting at the second spot on the chart, who can beat Tendulkar’s tally. Also, the way Rohit Sharma is going, it will not be a surprise if he comes on the third spot by the end of his career.
