“Dhoni finishes off in style, a magnificent six into the crowd, and India lifts the world cup after 28 years”, the voice of Ravi Shastri echoes and the close-up shot of Sushant Singh Rajput gives every Indian a flashback of the day with goosebumps even after five years of the historic win.
The unforgettable finish by the Indian skipper is deep embedded in the hearts of each and every fan, and Sushant seems to have done justice to it. As he strikes MSD’s most popular shot, it doesn’t seem to be a trailer but a replay of the match itself.
A cricket-obsessed nation where everyone knows the legend is quite aware of his heroic helicopter shot, and we have seen him transforming Indian cricket over the last decade or so, Neeraj Pandey’s biopic on the Indian skipper, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, is a much-awaited movie. While the captain recluses himself from giving interviews to the media, the upcoming biopic on one of the most successful captains in India promises to throw light in all such phases of his life which remain unknown to us.
Let’s take a look at some of the plots which seemed to have already been revealed in the trailer itself.
#1 The untold story of romance
The romantic side of the captain is not known to the public, but two leading actresses Dishani Roy and Kiara Advani give us hints of his love affair or may be the love tragedy which made him who he is today.
Though the romantic sequences and lovey dovey songs are much-needed ingredients of Bollywood but there is no denying, MS Dhoni’s love angle was equally filmy and had to be put across in the biopic.
Dishani Roy is supposedly playing the role of his ex-girlfriend, Priyanka Jha, whom he loses in a road accident whereas Kiara’s playing the role of that of Mrs. Sakshi Dhoni is very evident.
#2 Family’s wishes vs Passion
The trailer of the much-awaited biopic clearly suggests the obvious mentality of a middle-class Indian family where only books can make you successful and cricket bats are for recreation.
It is too relatable when his father says, “Khel khud apni jagah hai, lekin padhoge, likhoge, tabhi toh kissi laayak banoge”. Mahendra Singh Dhoni tries to balance both, his family’s wishes as well as his passion for cricket, but it was only to an extent till he had to choose between them.
We Indians are definitely happy with the decision he made that day, when he confronted his father saying, “Udhar Kharagpur me job k security me phas gaya na papa, toh hum age kuch nhi kar payega”. He chose uncertainties over the secured job he had but did become one of the greatest cricket players in the history of the game.
#3 Behind every successful man, there are friends
Neeraj Pandey promises to tell us some untold stories from the life of the man we all know. And, the trailer itself unwrap the struggles not only of the captain but also his buddies who all helped him through his struggle. Dhoni would not be the player he is today without the support of his friends.
The trailer gives us glimpses of the impatient student writing his exams eagerly wishing to leave the examination hall, only to go to cricket practice on time. But it would not have been impossible without his friends, who came every day with his cricket equipment and accompanied him to practice.
#4 The eyes which saw the hidden talent in him
The non-sensible statement of the coach, “Acha goalkeeping karta hai tum, cricket khelega?” makes sense only to those who have seen the Indian skipper’s brilliant wicket-keeping.
The trailer reveals that without this coach, Dhoni would have just been any other name in the crowd. It was the coach who saw the hidden potential in him though when he saw Dhoni as a kid, he was goalkeeping in a football match in his school.
We may find out later who this coach was but one thing is certain, had it not been for this person, Dhoni might not have contemplated taking up the sport of cricket at all.
#5 Controversial twists
The trailer also reveals a controversial plot, where Sushant aka MSD interacts with the selectors, revealing his decision of excluding three players who aren’t suitable for the ODI team, according to him.
It is quite evident that the selection meeting was just before the CB series in Australia in 2008. It was when Dhoni was leading the team which included some of the senior players like Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and VVS Laxman.
The selector’s remark about Dhoni trying to remove the people who promoted him, leaves a question in the mind of the audiences as to who were the seniors that Dhoni wanted out of his team?
