Mumbai’s (formerly Bombay) success in the Ranji Trophy is unparalleled. Till date, the city has celebrated 41 Trophies while no other side has managed to win even ten times. The sight of six-seven Mumbai cricketers in the Indian team was commonplace for a long time. Hence when 19-year old Amol had to choose between playing for the Indian under-19 team and the Mumbai Ranji team, he preferred the latter.

In the 1993-94 season, Mumbai arrived at Faridabad to face Haryana in the pre-quarterfinals. Muzumdar was informed well in advance by Captain Ravi Shastri about his debut and the batting position, hence he was able to prepare better. Batting alongside Jatin Paranjpe and Ravi Shastri, Muzumdar carved his name in the record books with an overnight score of 245.

The debutant added 15 more runs to the tally and was stumped on the gigantic score of 260. Muzumdar was a proud owner of the world record of highest score on debut in first-class cricket. He later became a stalwart of Mumbai cricket and scored more than 11,000 first-class runs.
