Ben Dunk's double hundred for Tasmania goes in vain as Queensland chase down record total

Despite an incredible double hundred, Ben Dunk ended up on the losing side

Ben Dunk’s incredible double century for Tasmania in the Matador BBQs One Day Cup (Australia’s domestic one-day competition) went in vain as Queensland chased down the total of 398 in just 47.2 overs in Sydney today.

Put in to bat first, Dunk smashed 229 not out off just 157 deliveries – the third highest individual score in all 50-over cricket – and along with Tim Paine (125 off 127), helped Tasmania to the highest team total in this year’s competition – 398/1 – before Queensland chased it with 7 wickets to spare.

Dunk’s innings was studded with 15 fours and 13 sixes, as he scored at a strike rate of 145.85. His score of 229 is less than only Ali Brown (268 vs Glamorgan in 2002) and Shikhar Dhawan (248 vs South Africa A in 2013) in List A cricket.

Captain George Bailey struck 33 off 19 deliveries to provide the late push for Tasmania.

However, despite the scintillating effort with the bat, Tasmania failed to defend the mammoth total.

Undaunted by the big target, Usman Khawaja and Chris Hartley put on a partnership of 280 runs for the opening wicket in 35.2 overs, almost sealing the deal for Queensland. 27-year-old Khawaja struck 18 fours and 7 sixes in his innings of 166 off 110 balls, while Hartley contributed with 142 off 120 deliveries, striking 13 fours and 4 sixes in his innings.

Usman Khawaja top scored for his team with 166 off just 110 balls

Khawaja was the first wicket to fall in the 36th over, bowled by medium pacer Evan Gulbis, but had laid a solid foundation for Queensland to complete an astonishing victory.

Hartley, who was scoring at almost run a ball till Khawaja’s departure, then upped the ante, before he was run out in the 42nd over, with Queensland needing just 56 runs from 52 deliveries.

Nathan Reardon (21 off 10) was the third wicket to fall for Queensland, but Joe Burns (48 off 36) and Peter Forrest (11 off 8) took the team home without any further hiccups.

Queensland’s score of 402/7 is the fourth highest 2nd innings total in all one-day cricket. It is also the second highest total in a successful chase in a one-day match after South Africa’s 438/9 against Australia in 2006.

An aggregate of 800 runs were scored in the match today at a loss of just 4 wickets. It is the 6th highest match aggregate in List A cricket.
