Former West Indies batsman Brian Lara has lashed out at the batting approach of the South African batsmen in the ongoing Test match against India. He took to Twitter to criticise South Africa's approach to saving the Test match.
The South African batsmen have been blocking most of the balls being bowled at them with determination. Even the bad balls were not put away by the Proteas. On Day Four, South Africa scored only 72 runs in 72 overs.
This sort of an approach is rarely seen in modern Test cricket, where teams are more attacking and usually score at above four runs an over. However, the South African strategy was backed by many, who felt that this was the purest form of Test cricket.
AB de Villiers, who likes to dominate bowlers in all formats of the game, has been unusually defensive so far. The South African captain, Hashim Amla, who has not been in the best of form lately led the South African ‘ blockathon’. While Amla finished Day Four on 23 off 207 balls, de Villiers scored just 11 off 91 balls.
Lara felt that the slow approach in saving the Test match will not help in cricket's aim to attract more fans to the stadium even if day-night Tests were introduced on a major scale.
After the recent success in the debut day-night Test match held at Adelaide between Australia and New Zealand, a lot of positive talks have emerged with many in the cricket fraternity vouching for the Tests to be introduced in the day-night format.
