Players who were the fastest to 1,000 runs across formats in international cricket

Though Vinod Kambli started his career extremely well, he could not maintain that run for long

India Under-19's top-order batsman Shubman Gill hit 86 off 94 balls against Bangladesh in the Quarter-Final of the ICC Under-19 World Cup to help steady the Indian ship after an early loss. That innings made him the batsman with the fewest innings to 1,000 runs in youth ODIs.

Sportskeeda looks back at six batsmen who have taken the fewest innings to reach four figures across all formats at the international level.

#6 Vinod Kambli

14 innings in Tests, 1994

A batsman of immense ability, left-handed Vinod Kambli's is a story of immense promise mixed with unexpected disappointments. He ended with an average of 54.20 in Tests after 17 matches, in which he cracked 4 centuries and 3 half-centuries. All of those triple-figure scores came in his first seven games, two of which were double tons.

In just his twelfth Test, he reached the landmark of 1,000 runs during an innings of 40 against West Indies at Mumbai with the opposition including the likes of Courtney Walsh. Kambli's talent was noticed far earlier when in 1989, he put on a world record unbeaten partnership of 664 with Sachin Tendulkar in a school game. However, indiscipline and inconsistency crept in as his career moved forward, and India could never fully utilise his potential.

#5 Neil Harvey

14 innings in Tests, 1950

One of the most gifted players to have played for Australia, Neil Harvey had amassed six centuries in his first 13 Test innings itself; and in just his fourteenth innings, he reached 1,000 runs for his country while not even 23. In a career of more than 6,000 runs and 21 centuries, Harvey averaged 48 with the bat with a best score of 205.

Against England at Brisbane in 1950 – his tenth Test match – he scored 74 and 12 to add a feather to his cap. His career ended with nearly 21,700 first-class runs with distinctions such as getting inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame and selected in the Australian Board's official Test Team of the twentieth century.

#4 Shubman Gill

In the quarter-final of the U-19 World Cup, Shubman Gill hit 86 against Bangladesh

13 innings in Under-19 ODIs, 2018

18-year-old Shubman Gill achieved the feat of 1,000 runs in youth ODIs in the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2018 while playing Bangladesh in the Quarter-Final at Queenstown. He continued his fantastic run in the tournament in which he crossed fifty each time he batted: 63 against Australia and 90* against Zimbabwe before getting 86 in the Bangladesh match.

In two first-class matches for Punjab, both of which came in the 2017-18 Ranji season, Gill hit a century and a half-century, though the latter came in an innings defeat against Bengal. He spoke of the influence his U-19 coach and former India captain Rahul Dravid had on his game, after being advised not to attempt aerial shots and play along the ground.

#3 Sir Don Bradman

Sir Don Bradman's 334 against England took him to one thousand runs in the longest format

13 innings in Tests, 1930

The great Sir Don Bradman piled up 6,996 runs in just 52 Tests. But that was not his only feat: an average of 99.94 and 29 centuries to go with 13 half-centuries. But that also included another feat, that of taking as few as 13 innings to get to 1,000 Test runs.

During the Ashes Test against England at Leeds in 1930, Australia batted first and piled up 566. More than half of the runs came from Bradman's bat – he got 334 when the next highest score was 50 – as he stitched 192 for the second wicket and 229 for the third wicket with captain Bill Woodfull and Alan Kippax, respectively.

#2 Sir Everton Weekes

12 innings in Tests, 1948

A legend of the game and one of the finest to have held a cricket bat, Sir Everton Weekes played 48 Tests with 15 centuries and 19 half-centuries, averaging in excess of 58.

All it took the Barbadian was 9 Tests to reach four figures, something which he did in 12 innings – one less than Sir Don. Against India at Mumbai in 1949, the match ended in a thrilling draw, but Weekes got 56 and 48 in the game to eventually become the joint-fastest to 1,000 Test runs.

#1 Herbert Sutcliffe

12 innings in Tests, 1924

Not even a year into international cricket, Herbert Sutcliffe was already beyond 1000 Test runs, and just like Weekes, it took him 9 Tests and 12 innings to get there. Also reaching the milestone in an Ashes Test, Sutcliffe slammed 143 at Melbourne – it was the third of the series with the first one also held at the same venue – as the visitors hammered the hosts by an innings and 29 runs.

That was England's only win in the four Tests played on the tour.
