India vs England 2016: Dark clouds loom over Chennai Test

The Eden Gardens in Kolkata played host to the second India-New Zealand Test in September

The city of Chennai is at present in a state of mourning. The passing away of their beloved Chief Minister Ms. J.Jayalalithaa has left the city as well as the entire state of Tamil Nadu in a deep state of grief.

Thousands gathered outside the Rajaji Hall, where the 68-year-old’s year body was placed for them to pay their last tributes and the last rites is to be held at 4:30 P.M later this evening.

In this present state, nothing can attract any more emphasis and yet, to add further misery, the cricket loving public of the city, it seems like, could face further issues with regards to viewing their favourite players in action.

The fifth and final Test of the India-England Test series is scheduled to be played from the 16th of December at the M.A.Chidambaram Stadium and if reports in the Mumbai Mirror are to believed, then the Board of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI) have another plan in mind, if things do out of control in the southern metro.

Top officials from the board, including the Secretary Ajay Shirke and the Chief Executive Rahul Johri have spoken to officials at the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association(TNCA) regarding the present situation and the local association have said there was no cause for concern at the moment, but the board is keeping another option open, if at all the situation worsens.

The alternate plan of the board, as reported by the daily, is that the game may be moved to the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, but there is absolutely no confirmation on that decision yet. The Cricket Association of Bengal have also not received any news on the same, as of now.

Speaking to the daily, Shirke said that NO decision had been made as of now over shifting the game out of the city.

“No such decision has been taken,” he said.

The secretary further confirmed on Tuesday that no decision had yet been taken on the issue and there will be more clarity over the matter later this week.

The secretary of the TNCA, Kasi Vishwanath said that preparations for the game were going on track and added that there was nothing wrong having an alternative if anything does go wrong.

“We have told the BCCI that we’re going ahead with our preparation. If the board is preparing Plan B, that is fine. They must be prepared for every eventuality but there is no change in schedule from our side as of now,” he said.

Both the Indian as well as the English teams are at present in Mumbai for the fourth Test of the series, which starts at the Wankhede Stadium from Thursday.
