South Africa’s bid to save the second Test in Bangalore received a big boost as the second day’s play was called off after persistent rain. While the rain was far from unexpected, it will come as welcome relief for the Proteas, who were bowled out for 214 on the first day.
India, who had won the toss and chose to field on day one, ended in complete control of the game thanks to their spinners and openers. After Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja took four wickets apiece, while Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan remained unbeaten until the close of play, to leave India 134 runs behind.
While it had been raining in Bangalore even before the Test began and the forecast for the next couple of days also includes plenty of rain, it was surprising that the second day, which was supposed to be a relatively dry day.
The rain, which is supposed to continue throughout the Test, is arguably the best bit of news that the Proteas have had in the Test series. Following injuries to fast bowlers Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander and some far-from solid batting from everyone bar AB de Villiers.
The wash out and the subsequent forecast, will come as a blow to India, who will have been hoping to score quickly and take a considerable lead in the Test and further assert their superiority in the series.
