In an unfortunate incident during a community cricket match, a 51-year-old employee of a steel and iron market died after suffering a heart attack, as per a report by Mid-Day. Kaustubh Dani, the deceased, was playing a 10-over tennis ball cricket match organised by the Bombay Iron Merchants Association at Wilson Gymkhana, Marine Lines.

The incident happened on the first day of the Iron & Steel Premier League (ISPL), a 10-over tournament that has been organised four times previously. Following the unfortunate event, the tournament was cancelled.

Dani was meant to be a good bowler for his side, the Arya Lions. According to the report, Dani fell down while fielding, however, he did not make any complaint at the time. While Dani had gone back to the dressing room, he collapsed while drinking water. The 51-year-old was rushed to Bombay Hospital immediately, where he was declared dead. He had no history of heart disease.

Tributes poured in for Dani from the Bombay Iron & Steel Merchant Association, Darukhana Iron & Steel Merchant Association, Steel Chamber of India and Bombay Iron & Steel Brokers Association yesterday. The organisations have also promised to raise INR 10 lakhs for Dani's family.

The tournament president, Anish Valia also vowed support to Dani's family. “Dani’s sons are quite young and he wanted one of them to peruse his further studies in the USA. We hope to fulfil his dream now,” Valia said.

Although a rare occurrence, lives being lost on the sports field is something that has happened even in the higher levels of the game. Namibian cricketer, Raymond van Schoor had lost his life after an on-field stroke. Another major loss on the field was Australian cricketer, Phillip Hughes during a domestic game in Australia.
