The Caribbean Premier League 2020 will be the first multi-franchise cricket event after the lock-down due to COVID-19. It will be the eighth edition of the T20 league in the Caribbean islands and will be the perfect sense of entertainment before the Indian Premier League starts off in UAE. The tournament will begin on 18 August 2020 and the Final will be played on 10 September 2020, which will be the 33rd game of the competition.
The CPL is played in the West Indies annually since 2013. A total of 7 teams have participated in the tournament so far with one of them now defunct. In the previous 7 seasons, there have been 3 different winners. The Trinbago Knight Riders (earlier known as Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel) have won the title thrice while the Jamaica Tallawahs and Barbados Tridents have won it twice each.
The Caribbean Premier League will have six teams namely Trinbago Knight Riders, Guyana Amazon Warriors, Barbados Tridents, St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, Jamaica Tallawahs and St Lucia Zouks play a double round-robin league stage. All teams will be playing every other team twice before making it to the semi-final stage. The top-placed and fourth-placed teams will play the first semi-final followed by the second and third-placed teams contesting the other semi-final.
The Final will be played a couple of days after the second semi-final.
Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the CPL this year will be conducted across just venues in the same city. The Queen Park’s Oval, Port of Spain and the Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba, both situated in Trinidad will host all the 33 matches with the Final scheduled at the latter.
Star Sports will telecast the CPL 2020 and it will be streamed online on Disney+ Hotstar.
