Jail for Asif, Aamer, Butt and their agent Majeed.

Greed thrills but kills

Pakistani cricketers Mohammed Asif, Mohammed Aamer and Salman Butt, against whom allegations of spot fixing were levelled, were sentenced to different duration of jail terms after being found guilty a few days ago.

The Southwark Crown Court of London sentenced Mohammed Aamer to 6 months in jail, Mohammed Asif to 1 year and Salman Butt for 2 years and 6 months. The players’ agent Mazhar Majeed was given the strongest punishment considering the fact that he was the instrumental in brokering the deal although it is suggested that Butt was the main conspirator in this entire scam.

All the accused have also been penalised. While Butt was asked to fork out 30,937 pounds, Asif and Aamer were told to pay 8,120 and 9,389 pounds respectively.

Said the Justice Jeremy Cooke, who was at the bench, while convicting the players

“These offences, regardless of pleas, are so serious that only a sentence of imprisonment will suffice,”

Here is wishing the accused a jolly good time in prison for bringing disrepute to a thoroughly entertaining and professional game.
