India vs WI
India bowled particularly well during the last two sessions on Day 2 of the two-day practice game against WICB BPXI

Final Score: India 258/6 dec. in 93 overs (Rohit Sharma 54, KL Rahul 50, Warrican 2/61) drew with WICB BPXI 271/7 in 87 overs (Hope 111*, Warrican 50*, Mishra 4/71)

So that’s about it for the day and the match, as the players are shaking hands now and have decided to close out the contest. The match has been drawn, with the WICB BPXI scoring 271/7 in 87 overs, in reply to India’s total of 258/6 dec.

86 overs – WI BPXI 270/7. Warrican 50, Hope 110; India 258/6 dec.

The bowlers are definitely getting tired. Ishant bowled two half volleys outside off stump and one of them disappeared for a boundary. There was another boundary in the same over. Warrican has brought up his 50 now and the WICB BPXI have overhauled India’s total of 258/6 dec. and lead by 12 runs now.

Ishant Sharma has been brought back.

84 overs – WI BPXI 255/7. Warrican 41, Hope 105; India 258/6 dec.

Warrican is getting into the groove now. He has amassed 13 runs from the last two overs. Seems like the Indians are getting tired now.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar comes back.

82 overs – WI BPXI 238/7. Warrican 28, Hope 105; India 258/6 dec.

The last hour was signalled at 4:30 pm local time, which is 2:00 am IST. This means that we still have about 20 minutes of play left.

The second new ball has been taken. Umesh Yadav to bowl.

80 overs – WI BPXI 227/7. Warrican 21, Hope 101; India 258/6 dec.

Shai Hope gets his hundred, by carving Umesh Yadav for a boundary. What a brilliant knock by the West Indies top order batsman. This should give him a lot of confidence.

Umesh Yadav to bowl from the other end. It’s 224/7 after 79 overs, Hope 101, Warrican 18.

78 overs – WI BPXI 217/7. Warrican 17, Hope 96; India 258/6 dec.

Bowling short won’t get him the wicket, though. Mishra drops one short and gets pulled away by Hope through midwicket for four. Hope moves on to 96. It would be a brilliant hundred if he gets there.

Mishra comes back, yet again, and his bowling from around the wicket to the right-handed batsmen. He would be aiming at a five-wicket haul.

76 overs – WI BPXI 213/7. Warrican 17, Hope 91; India 258/6 dec.

Hope is slowly but steadily inching closer to his century. India, on the other hand, would be dying to wrap up the innings quickly. Meanwhile, Umesh Yadav has replaced Amit Mishra.

73 overs – WI BPXI 207/7. Warrican 15, Hope 87; India 258/6 dec.

And, Mishra switches ends. Shami bowled a couple of yorkers in the last over. Are these indications of some reverse swing that is on offer?

71 overs – WI BPXI 202/7. Warrican 11, Hope 86; India 258/6 dec.

Mohammad Shami has been brought back. He replaces Mishra.

The 200 has been raised by the WICB batsmen. They’re only 58 runs behind India’s total in the first innings. It’s 200/7 after 70 overs with Dawes batting on 10 and Hopes on 85.

69 overs – WI BPXI 195/7. Warrican, Hope 84; India 258/6 dec.

Hope has looked solid since the moment he had occupied the crease for the first time today. A fluent boundary off Ishant through the cover region was a testament to the form that he has recently gained. He looks set to get a hundred.

The drinks break has been taken. WICB are 191/7 after 68 overs; Dawes 6, Hope 81; Mishra 4/49

67 overs – WI BPXI 189/7. Warrican, Hope 80; India 258/6 dec.

Shai Hope holds the key for the WICB BPXI and he should look to bat positively with the tail. Mishra, meanwhile, would be aiming for his fifth wicket. Hope needs 20 more runs to complete a century.

65 overs – WI BPXI 181/7. Warrican, Hope 75; India 258/6 dec.

Mishra had done a wonderful job here for his side, and he isn’t done yet. Three more wickets for India to take, and they would back themselves for it.

Ishant Sharma comes back, replacing Kumar.

Jomel Warrican is the new batsman.

Fourth wicket for Mishra, as Jacobs lobs one in the air only for Rahul to take the catch on the off-side. WICB are 177/7. The Indian leg-spinner has bowled beautifully today.

63 overs – WI BPXI 177/6. Jacobs 1, Hope 74; India 258/6 dec.

Amidst all the carnage, Shai Hope has raced away to 74, which is the top individual score in this match. Should he get a hundred, he would walk out at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, Guyana, on July 21 with a large chunk of confidence.

Damion Jacobs is the new batsman.

Mishra gets his third wicket. Vishaul Singh departs, as he gets caught by Pujara off Mishra.

61 overs – WI BPXI 171/5. Singh 14, Hope 69; India 258/6 dec.

The boundary in the last over set aside, Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s spell has been a mesmerising one. His figures read 10-5-11-1.

59 overs – WI BPXI 169/5. Singh 14, Hope 67; India 258/6 dec.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar comes back, and he gets carved for a boundary. Hope and Singh are batting sensibly now. The best thing for WI’s confidence from here would be if they out-bat the Indians and overhaul their score.

57 overs – WI BPXI 164/5. Singh 14, Hope 62; India 258/6 dec.

The run deficit is now under a hundred runs. India would look to bowl the WICB side out before they overhaul India’s total. Results aside, the game has now become more about confidence.

55 overs – WI BPXI 158/5. Singh 8, Hope 62; India 258/6 dec.

Mishra and Yadav continue from where they had left off before tea. No damage done in the first two overs of the session, as opposed to the 30 minutes of play that preceded it, that saw 4 wickets fall in 6 overs.

The umpires and the players are taking the field now. The third session is about to get underway. Amit Mishra to start the proceedings for India.

TEA – Day 2

A dramatic turnaround in then last six overs of the second session turned the game in India’s over. It all started when Mishra got Chandrika stumped off a flighted delivery and got Blackwood caught behind off the very next ball. Shami, from the other end, in the very next over, got Roston Chase caught by Rahane, while Yadav got Dowrich trapped LBW in the last over before tea. India would take a lot of strength from the last 30 minutes of Session 2, and would look to bowl the WICB side out when they come out for the third session.

53 overs – WI BPXI 151/5. Singh 1, Hope 62; India 258/6 dec.

Vishaul Singh is the new batsman and scores a solitary run before the players go off for TEA.

The fifth wicket is down now. Umesh Yadav comes back and picks up a wicket. He traps Shane Dowrich leg-before-wicket. WICB have lost half their side, and the last 4 wickets have come in the last 4 overs.

50 overs – WI BPXI 150/4. Dowrich 7, Hope 62; India 258/6 dec.

Three quick wickets have certainly revitalised the Indians. There were two slips and a short leg in place for Mishra in the 52nd over. India should maintain the pressure here and not let the batsmen settle down once again. Meanwhile, the 150 has been raised by the WICB batsmen.

Umesh Yadav has been brought back.

50 overs – WI BPXI 139/4. Dowrich 4, Hope 55; India 258/6 dec.

WICB XI are 4 down now, and India are back in the contest. Shane Dowrich is the new batsman.

Wickets are coming thick and fast for India now. Suddenly, the West Indies batsmen are falling apart. Shami gets into the act and dismisses Chase, getting him caught by Rahane at slip.

48 overs – WI BPXI 132/3. Chase 3, Hope 54; India 258/6 dec.

Mishra was on a hattrick but didn’t get it.

All of a sudden, India are back in the game. Roston Chase is the new man.

Jermaine Blackwood comes in and goes out off the very next ball. Caught by Saha, behind the stumps. Two in two for Mishra and he is on a hat-trick.

Mishra coming round the wicket now. A short leg has been put in place. And the wicket comes! Finally, India have broken through. Flighted by Mishra, Chandrika comes down the track in an attempt to heave him over the top but missed the ball. Saha whips the bails off, and Mishra gets his first wicket.

46 overs – WI BPXI 122/1. Chandrika 62, Hope 54; India 258/6 dec.

Nothing seems to be working for the Indian bowlers. Kohli is trying to rotate his bowlers as much as he can. He’s giving them short spells, perhaps in a bid to unsettle the batsmen and not allow them to get used to a particular bowler. But, none of his tactics have worked so far.

Mohammad Shami to bowl from the other end. He replaces Ishant Sharma.

44 overs – WI BPXI 113/1. Chandrika 57, Hope 50; India 258/6 dec.

Mishra flights one up, and Chandrika uses his feet, comes down the track and drives it uppishly towards long off. It didn’t go for a boundary but made the batsman’s intentions clear. This is a brilliant counter-attack by the WICB batsmen.

Mishra has been brought back into the attack.

There is a mini team meeting happening at the moment at one of the two ends. Clearly, the Indians are worried about Chandrika and Hope’s progress here.

The players are back after the break. Ishant Sharma starts the proceedings. He gets flicked off the pads by Hope for a boundary, who also brings up his fifty in the same over. Both the batsmen have now reached their half-centuries.

Drinks break!

42 overs – WI BPXI 101/1. Chandrika 50, Hope 45; India 258/6 dec.

An Ishant Sharma short ball was pulled with absolute disdain by Shai Hope towards square leg for a boundary. The WICB batsmen are finding it pretty comfortable out there in the middle. An overpitched delivery by Shami in the following over was lofted over long on for another boundary. The batsmen are breaking free and India need to regroup, which they must do during the drinks break. Meanwhile, Rajendra Chandrika has brought up his half-century.

40 overs – WI BPXI 93/1. Chandrika 46, Hope 41; India 258/6 dec.

Change in bowling at both ends for India. Ishant Sharma and Mohammad Shami are now bowling in tandem. But, Hope and Chandrika are still finding the middle of the bat. They are also leaving the ball well. This should give a lot of hope to the West Indies Test side, as two of their main Test batsmen are putting up good performances.

Ishant Sharma has been asked to bowl now.

38 overs – WI BPXI 91/1. Chandrika 44, Hope 41; India 258/6 dec.

WICB BPXI are inching closer to the 100-run mark now, and they have lost only one wicket. All the strike bowlers that India have in their lineup have been put to the test now. Somebody needs to do something special, or somebody else needs to roll his arms over now, it seems, to get India a wicket. Both batsmen are approaching half-centuries as well.

36 overs – WI BPXI 86/1. Chandrika 44, Hope 37; India 258/6 dec.

Yadav conceded four off his first over of his second spell, while a flighted delivery by Mishra outside off stump was driven handsomely through the covers for four by Chandrika in the following over. The pace-spin combination isn’t working either, and both the WI batsmen look to be well set at the crease.

Umesh Yadav has been brought back.

34 overs – WI BPXI 78/1. Chandrika 39, Hope 33; India 258/6 dec.

Chances are being created, but still no success for the Indian bowlers. Mishra is troubling the WI batsman and is asking questions. However, Hope and Chandrika have been solid at the crease.

32 overs – WI BPXI 74/1. Chandrika 36, Hope 33; India 258/6 dec.

A couple of close chances came in the last over. The second ball of the 32nd saw an outside edge, off the batsman’s bat, fly tantalisingly close to the man at first slip. On the fifth ball, Hope padded a delivery on the leg stump, which Wriddhiman Saha grabbed, running backwards towards fine leg, only for the umpire to state that there was no bat involved. Suddenly, Mishra is creating chances.

30 overs – WI BPXI 71/1. Chandrika 36, Hope 30; India 258/6 dec.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowls from the other end, while Mishra continues from one end. The combination of pace and spin has been deployed. It remains to be seen as to whether this combination can get India the wickets.

28 overs – WI BPXI 68/1. Chandrika 35, Hope 28; India 258/6 dec.

Amit Mishra starts the proceedings for India and concedes just one run off the 28th over. But restricting the runs would not be the only prerogative of the visiting side. They need to pick up wickets. One Mishra delivery spun sharply after pitching and nearly took the outside edge of Hope’s willow.

The umpires and the players are taking the field now. The second session of Day 2 is about to begin. Amit Mishra to start proceedings for India.

This is how the Indian bowlers have performed so far in the match.

It is LUNCH, now, on the second day of the practice match between India and the WICB Board President’s XI. A session that has been shared by the two sides, it has to be said, as, after the early breakthrough that India got when Kumar dismissed Johnson, WICB came back on the backs of Shai Hope and Rajendra Chandrika. The partnership between the two now stands at 60 runs and India would look to take wickets in the next two sessions.

27 overs – WI BPXI 67/1. Chandrika 35, Hope 27; India 258/6 dec.

The partnership between the two West Indies batsman has been flourishing from strength to strength. They have played the leg-spinner with caution so far and seem to have put a heavy price on their wicket. India need to strike before the lunch break. Hope, now, is getting the boundaries too. Earlier, it was only Chandrika who was finding the fence. Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowls the last over before lunch, but to no success.

24 overs – WI BPXI 61/1. Chandrika 35, Hope 21; India 258/6 dec.

The partnership between Chandrika and Hope is of 55 runs at the moment, and they are, albeit slowly, building the WI BPXI’s innings. India, sooner rather than later, will have to get another wicket. Chandrika hit a boundary off Shami in the 23rd over.

Mohammad Shami comes back and replaces Yadav at the Southern End.

22 overs – WI BPXI 54/1. Chandrika 29, Hope 20; India 258/6 dec.

So, after four five-over spells by each of the four premier fast bowlers, the time has come for some spin, With Ashwin not playing, it is the leg-spinner, Amit Mishra, who has been given the ball. Meanwhile, Chandrika and Hope have raised WI BPXI’s fifty.

Amit Mishra has been introduced into the attack.

20 overs – WI BPXI 48/1. Chandrika 28, Hope 15; India 258/6 dec.

One would feel that something is going to give in here. Sharma and Yadav have been very tight, but Chandrika and Hope have been equally patient. With pace not really getting the wickets, one would also feel that the spinners may be seen flexing their muscles very soon.

18 overs – WI BPXI 47/1. Chandrika 28, Hope 14; India 258/6 dec.

Save for the no ball, bowled by Sharma in the 18th over, the last two overs haven’t seen a single being scored off the bat. A wide first slip and a very short mid-on, adjacent to the pitch near the bowler’s end have been the features of India’s field placement so far. Some tremendous pressure is being maintained by the Indian bowlers after the drinks break. Will it culminate into a wicket?

16 overs – WI BPXI 46/1. Chandrika 28, Hope 14; India 258/6 dec.

Umesh Yadav continues after the drinks break. He strays in line on the last ball, sprays one down the leg side, and gets clipped off the pads by Chandrika towards the fine leg area for four. Ishant Sharma continues from the other end and bowls a maiden first up.

The first DRINKS break has been taken.

14 overs – WI BPXI 40/1. Chandrika 23, Hope 13; India 258/6 dec.

It has been an enticing first half of the first session of the second day of the practice match. While India picked up the wicket of the BPXI captain, Leon Johnson, Shai Hope and Rajendra Chandrika have been able to consolidate the innings from thereon. Mohammad Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma are the bowlers who have been used by India.

13 overs – WI BPXI 38/1. Chandrika 22, Hope 13; India 258/6 dec.

Chandrika and Hope are trying to rebuild the BPXI innings after the early setback that they suffered at the hands of Kumar. Four of the five premier fast bolwers who have been picked for the tour have already bowled now.

Ishant Sharma comes on from the other end now.

11 overs – WI BPXI 31/1. Chandrika 18, Hope 10; India 258/6 dec.

Umesh Yadav bowls a decent first over. Although, one ball went for a boundary. The last ball just missed the off stump by a whisker.

Umesh Yadav has been introduced into the attack.

10 overs – WI BPXI 22/1. Chandrika 10, Hope 10; India 258/6 dec.

Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have bowled tight spells of 5 overs each. However, Shami was a bit off the mark in the previous over, wherein he conceded two boundaries. Chandrika drove him off his pads towards long on, while Hope drove him through the covers.

8 overs – WI BPXI 12/1. Chandrika 8, Hope 2; India 258/6 dec.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar comes round the wicket, and gets India their first wicket, as Johnson nicks one behind to Dhawan at 2nd slip. It was a good length ball and moved slightly away from the left-hander after pitching. India have got the breakthrough. Shai Hope is the new batsman.

Chandrika, in the meantime, has taken a couple of twos and has reached 8, while Shai Hope is batting on 2.

6 overs – WI BPXI 3/0. Chandrika 1, Johnson 2; India 258/6 dec.

WI BPXI get off the mark, finally, in the 5th over of their innings. However, no boundaries have been scored so far. An excellent job is being done by Shami and Kumar. Overcast conditions have helped the Indian seamers so far, as they have extracted some movement in the air. Kohli has got three slips in position. Earlier, there were four. A straight drive off the last ball of the 6th over by Chandrika hit the stumps at the non-striker’s end.

4 overs – WI BPXI 0/0. Chandrika 0, Johnson 0; India 258/6 dec.

Kumar and Shami have maintained tight lines and lengths and have not allowed the WI BPXI batsmen to score runs at all. A good start for India. Although, they would love to have early wickets.

2 overs – WI BPXI 0/0. Chandrika 0, Johnson 0; India 258/6 dec.

Rajendra Chandrika and Leon Johnson open the innings for WI BPXI. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammad Shami take the new ball for India. In the second over, there was a huge appeal by Mohammad Shami and India against Johnson for caught behind, which was denied by the umpire.

India have declared their first innings at 258/6!

93 overs – India 258/6. Sharma 54, Mishra 18

India resume proceedings after finishing on 258/3 on Day 2 of the two-day practice match against West Indies Board President’s XI ahead of their four-match Test series against the West Indies, that begins on July 21 with the first Test in Guyana. Two of India’s top three batsmen scored half-centuries, with Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul making 51 and 50 respectively before retiring in order to give other batsmen the chance to bat.

Cheteshwar Pujara spent ample time at the crease, making 34 runs from 102 deliveries, while the captain, Virat Kohli, couldn’t translate his limited-overs form into the longer format of the game, as he was dismissed for 14, while Ajinjya Rahane was dismissed for 5. Thereafter, Rohit Sharma and Wriddhiman Saha steadied the Indian ship through their knocks of 54 and 22. After Saha’s dismissal, Amit Mishra partnered Sharma and ensured that India lost no more wickets until the end of the day’s play.
