Maharashtra Ranji Trophy captain Rohit Motwani's car burgled

Maharashtra’s Rohit Motwani

A bag containing jewellery worth around Rs five lakh has been burgled from the car of the Maharashtra Ranji Trophy captain Rohit Motwani, police have confirmed. The Pune-based player had parked his car near a hotel in Bund Garden area and had gone to attend a programme when the incident occurred. Police are currently searching for the unidentified person or persons responsible for perpetrating this crime.

The 25-year-old cricketer had been on a private visit accompanied by his wife, who he had married earlier this year, and his in-laws, reaching the venue around 9:30 and departing two hours later.

"Since the hotel parking was full, I parked my car in one of the adjacent lanes at around 9.30 pm," Motwani said, regarding the incident. When they left the venue, they reached the car to see that the left rear windowpane of the car was broken. On closer inspection, it was discovered that a bag of jewellery which had been kept between the seats was also missing.

A police complaint was lodged immediately. "We are checking whether there are any CCTV cameras around the area," a Koregaon Park police officer said. There is no way to know yet if this was a planned crime or if Motwani’s car merely happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Motwani, who is a left-handed batsman and a wicket-keeper, was included in the India A squad to play the warm-up one-day match against England in January 2013. He has been captain of Maharashtra on an irregular basis from a very early age, having been given the responsibility at the age of 20, but has not been on the national selectors’ radar since.
