Mayank Agarwal, the 27-year-old from Bangalore, is an attacking opening batsman. Right from his early days, Mayank has been a fierce striker of the ball and has modelled his batting technique on the veteran Indian opener Virender Sehwag.

It was in the Under-19 Cooch Behar Trophy in 2008 that Agarwal showcased his special talent, striking 432 runs at an average of over 50. Agarwal’s knock of 160 in Hobart next year for the India Under 19s is one of the best knocks in the history of youth ODIs.

However, stints with Delhi Daredevils, Rising Pune Supergiant and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL, along with several tours with India A have still not ensured an Indian national team call-up for Mayank. However, a spirited Mayank has raised his game and has been in unbelievable form this domestic season, breaking several records.

Mayank Agarwal has scored the most runs in an Indian domestic season across all formats. Agarwal now has 2162 runs in 32 innings in one single season. This means he averages 67.56 runs per innings, a whopping number. The previous best was Shreyas Iyer’s tally of 1947 runs in 37 innings in 2015-16 followed by Wasim Jaffer’s 1907 runs in 30 innings in 2008-09.

Agarwal was the highest run-getter in the 2017/18 Ranji Trophy season and accumulated 1160 runs in 13 innings at an average of 105.45. In fact, Agarwal was the only batsman to score more than 1000 runs in the tournament.

Despite the fact that his team did not reach the final, he managed to remain the highest run scorer by a considerable margin. The next highest in the season was Faiz Fazal with 912 runs. The all-time highest run scorer in a single Ranji Trophy season is V.V.S. Laxman who scored 1415 runs in the 1999-2000 Ranji Trophy playing for Hyderabad.

#3 Most runs in Vizay Hazare Trophy

The Karnataka batsman has flourished in the Vijay Hazare Trophy this season. Mayank went on to score 723 runs in 8 innings in the season, which is the most in an Inter-State Domestic List-A Tournament, surpassing Dinesh Karthik’s tally of 607 runs in 9 matches in the 2016-17 season.

In the 8 innings that Agarwal batted in the Vijay Hazare tournament, he scored 3 centuries and notched 4 scores of over 80 (including a 90 in the finals).

#4 Over 250 runs in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

The opening batsman from Bangalore scored 258 runs in the T20 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 9 innings, including as many as 3 half-centuries with a brilliant strike rate of 144.94. Baroda’s KH Devdhar leads the charts with 411 runs in 8 innings at a strike rate of 137.00.

Agarwal’s 86 runs against the Kerala side is the third highest individual score by a Karnataka batsman after Karun Nair’s twin hundreds.

#5 Most runs in a List-A tournament

The record for the most runs in a List-A tournament was previously held by Sachin Tendulkar who scored 673 runs in the 2003 ICC World Cup. Tendulkar had scored one century and six fifties in the tournament. However, Mayank Agarwal broke his record with stellar performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, compiling 723 runs (3 hundreds and 4 fifties) at an average of 90.37 and a strike rate of over 107.
