Moin Khan returns to Pakistan following casino controversy

Pakistan Cricket team’s Chief Selector Moin Khan, who was recalled from the World Cup for visiting a casino, returned to Pakistan amidst angry protesters on Thursday. The 43-year-old slipped away quietly from Karachi International Airport as he escaped a group of protesters who had gathered to vent their anger with eggs and banners of disapproval.

Appearing visibly shaken and tense, Moin avoided the media waiting outside the terminal building and drove away with his friend. Television channels showed youngsters at the airport smashing eggs on their heads in anger after learning Moin had left.

Security was provided for the former Pakistani test captain when he reached home as more unhappy fans waited for him outside.

"We have deployed some police at Moin's residence for security reasons as people were causing disturbances," said senior police official Tariq Dharejo.

Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman, Shaharyar Khan told reporters in Lahore that he would be meeting with Moin soon to find out his version and why he went to the Casino.

Inappropriate judgement on my part: Moin Khan

Moin Khan publicly apologised for his actions and said that he only went to the Casino to have dinner with some friends and mentioned it was a bad error of judgement on his part.

"I went to the casino to have dinner with some friends but in hindsight it was an inappropriate judgment on my part given the disappointment in the team's performance at the World Cup, I apologise to the people. The PCB has called me back and I respect their decision but I never knew my actions would have such serious repercussions." said Moin Khan.

Gambling and alcohol are prohibited in Pakistan and former test players have raised questions on why Moin, a member of the 1992 World Cup-winning squad, visited the casino.

"He has brought shame to Pakistan cricket and should be blacklisted," said ex-paceman Sarfraz Nawaz.

Shahid Nazir, former fast bowler, said: "The PCB should hold a judicial inquiry...how can a chief selector behave so carelessly?."

Pakistan have lost their first two World Cup matches to India and West Indies and are currently at the bottom of Group B. They face Zimbabwe on March 1, Sunday at Brisbane.
