N Srinivasan takes charge as first ICC Chariman

N Srinivasan has been appointed the first ICC chairman

Barred by the Supreme Court of India as BCCI President, N.Srinivasan, as expected, was confirmed as the Chairman of the newly revamped ICC, after constitutional changes were passed by the governing body of the ICC in Melbourne on Thursday.

"It is an honour to be confirmed as the Chairman of the International Cricket Council,” the 69-year-old Srinivasan said.

“I will leave no stone unturned in trying to strengthen the pillars and foundations of our sport, both on and off the field. I want to ensure that cricket retains and grows its popularity, and that the ICC plays a leading role in this global growth,” he further added.

As expected, the changes to the ICC structure were passed without any roadblocks in the meeting after all full member nations expressed satisfaction to the implementations.

"I want to see more strong teams in international cricket. For this to be achieved, we all need to work hard to develop local talent in our countries. Naturally, there will be more support to those who first show they can help themselves.

"The ICC is a Members' organisation and the pathway is now there for any Member to play Test cricket or in the major ICC events if it performs well enough over a sustained period of time," stated Srinivasan.

Srinivasan was in Melbourne briefing about the new structure to his Australian and England counterparts – Wally Edwards and Giles Clarke for the last two days. It has to be noted that the Supreme Court of India has banned Srinivasan from returning to the head post of BCCI until the Mudgal commission investigations regarding IPL fixing allegations are completed.

Despite the ongoing investigations, the apex court had earlier refused to hear a plea to stop Srinivasan from taking charge as ICC Chairman, saying there is ‘no conflict’ in that regard.
