Not only is this post late, it is also one laced with hero worshipping. There ain’t a lot many men who have a thought process as uncluttered, a mind that believes in simple calculations, a person for whom 1+1 always equals 2 and never anything else. Never. If the ball is in his zone or out of it, whether the opposition is weak or strong, whatever the pressure, Virender Sehwag is going to hit you if he wishes, and hit you so hard that not only will you be astonished but also dumb founded. Many a well laid plans have been sent back to the drawing boards, torn if not tattered. The best of bowlers have been made to look mediocre, Sehwag’s batting is of a bully, who treats each ball with only as much respect as it deserves, not a iota more or less.
Critics had said all that was to be said against his so called lack of technique, and how he would be sorted out soon by the teams that play cricket. No footwork, no temperament had been made adjectives for his style of play, ridiculous and astounding were uttered in the same breath for the shots the Nawab of Nazafgarh. It was no surprise, then that he called the India-Bangladesh match a revenge game. Not one to mince words, and always calling a spade, spade. He had on a earlier trip dismissed Bangla bowling, commenting that they didn’t have it in them to take 20 Indian wickets in a game, and yes they didn’t.
In a press conference prior to the beginning of the World Cup, he had announce “I want to bat 50 overs”. Rival captains must have lost sleep over this, for he is one man who if he remains on the crease for half of those overs, takes the match so far away from the grasp of his opponents that it remains more of academic interest. 50 overs is too much for Sehwag and no score is out of reach for him. Since the time he had announced that he wanted to score a double in ODI, think this was after the Multan triple, his ODI scores had plummeted, that he has one of the best averages for and opener and attacking at that in tests but a not so praise worthy average in ODIs is like a pun on his capabilities.
A self confessed Sachin’s fan, he has modelled his game on Sachin, his initial days opening with his idol were like having Sachin play on both the ends. That he has emerged out of such a big shadow and careved more than a niche for himself is testament to his hard work and dedication. There is a wild streak in him, reaching hundreds, doubles and triples with sixes in not every body and their neighbours cup of tea. It needs loads of self belief, and the power of a uncluttered mind, that can analyse and gauge the situation and provide the simplest of solutions, plank the left leg towards long on make room, and hit, hit hard.
The world cup has just begun, & we still have numerous matches to be played, the more matches that Sehwag stays for 50 overs, or close, the more we have a chance of keeping the cup to ourselves. Go get the cup oh men in blue, billions of people wish and hope this of you. Nothing short of the cup itself is going to douse the aspirations of the fans.
P.S. I hope Sachin & Sehwag both stay for 50 overs, we might just see 500 runs in an ODI!!!!!
