Shane Jurgensen to quit as Bangladesh coach

Shane Jurgenson, the Bangladesh head coach, has quit from his position after a series of unfavourable results and rumours of him losing the support of some of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) directors.

Jurgenson will leave his post after the 3-match ODI series against India in June is completed, a series which has yet not got a go-ahead from the BCCI.

“We have received a letter from Jurgensen that he will not continue as coach after the home series against India in June,” BCB spokesman Jalal Yunus said.

He added: “He did not give any reason but we assume he is upset with recent media speculation about his position. One of the reasons he has given is that he saw in the media that some directors have spoken against him. There was no official communication with him in this regard. I didn’t expect such a letter.”

Yunus revealed that Jurgenson’s resignation is yet to be granted as “it is an emotional decision and we are prepared to talk to him about it”.

The Bangladesh team has incited a lot of criticism following the disappointing performances in the Asia Cup, bilateral series against Sri Lanka and the World Cup T20. The losses to minnows like Nepal in the WCT20 and Afghanistan in the Asia Cup in particular weren’t received well by the supporters. After the World T20 loss, BCB President Nazmul Hasan revealed that he was considering some extensive changes in the team and its support staff.

Keeping in mind the World Cup 2015, BCB will have to settle the issue or start the hunt for a new coach.
