South Africa vs India 2018, 2nd Test, Day 5: 5 things we learnt from the day

2nd Sunfoil Test: South Africa v India, Day 4
India succumbed to a much anticipated series loss on day 5 of the second Test

Constantly harried and persistently attacked, India succumbed to yet another series loss outside the sub-continent, this time the 21-year-old Lungi Ngidi pivotal in India's collapse on a very 'Indian' pitch at Supersport Park in Centurion. At 35/3, India were down and out of the contest by stumps yesterday, but the presence of Pujara gave them hope.

That didn't last long, as the no.3 was run-out for a second time in the Test and Ngidi scythed through the remaining batting, with Rohit Sharma belatedly showcasing some intent to push his case for the third Test. In the end, Ngidi's 6/39 was too good for the Indian batting.

#5 Pujara owns unwanted record

1st Sunfoil Test: South Africa v India, Day 2
Pujara was India's key on day fiveCheteshwar Pujara seems to have take Virat Kohli's call for 'intent' quite seriously. The no.3 batsman has been intent on getting impossible runs, something his dodgy knee is barely capable of. In the first innings, he was dismissed by an immaculate throw from Ngidi for a golden duck while attempting a non-existent single.

In the second, he appeared more confident at the crease than in the first Test, but yet again threw it away going for a third run and taking on the arm of AB de Villiers; never a good idea that.

The throw came in right on the bounce for Quinton de Kock who sent Pujara on his way with a quick bit of glovework. Pujara is now the only Indian to be run-out in either innings of a Test and the first since Stephen Fleming in 2000.

#4 Sensational fielding from South Africa peg India back

South Africa v Sri Lanka - Third Test, Day 4
Morne Morkel pulled off a blinder near the fine leg ropes

While it was always going to be tough to bat on the final day, it was South Africa's fielding, rather than their bowling, that had India in strife in the morning session. Sensational tag-team fielding from Lungi Ngidi, AB de Villiers and Quinton de Kock sent back Cheteshwar Pujara, India's biggest hope heading into the all important final day.

Parthiv Patel then hooked Kagiso Rabada to deep fine leg where Morne Morkel stormed in, pulled off a sensational dive and completed a terrific catch. It was a catch to remember for the big man. You could hear some South African fielder screaming on the stump mike - "C'mon boys. One for the bowlers now". The words epitomised how good the Proteas were in the field.

#3 Hardik Pandya's horror shot

1st Sunfoil Test: South Africa v India, Day Four
Lungi Ngidi got the better of Hardik Pandya

With India in strife at 65/5, Hardik Pandya walked out, taking confident upbeat strides. He has so often been India's saviour in such situations of late, most recently at Cape Town in the first Test where his counter-attacking 93 lent respectability to India's first innings total.

South Africa had an orthodox field for Pandya's unorthodox technique and shot-making and stuck to bowling outside the off-stump channel, giving little room for him to free his arms. To his credit, Pandya was patient and defended calmly.

But the battle didn't last long as Lungi Ngidi dragged a short ball very wide of off-stump only for Pandya to throw his bat at it and edge behind to de Kock. If ever there was a horror Test shot, this was one.

#2 Shami and Rohit delay the inevitable

1st Sunfoil Test: South Africa v India, Day Four
It was a litmus test for Rohit Sharma in whites

Rohit Sharma and Mohammad Shami entertained Indian fans in a 61 ball fiesty stand that reaped 54 runs. Shami was at his unorthodox best, swishing wildly with all the freedom in the World while Rohit Sharma, peppered by short stuff, resisted, attacked, resisted again and eventually attacked again.

The last of those almost landed in no-man's land but AB de Villiers in his Superman Avatar scampered in from the deep and pulled off a spectacular catch. Once the 54 run stand was broken with Rohit the man dismissed, India had nowhere to hide.

#1 Lungi Ngidi's spectacular debut

South Africa v Sri Lanka - 1st T20
Ngidi's Test debut was much more impressive than his good T20 debutNgidi had Indian batsmen dancing to the beat of 'Lungi dance' with a sizzling spell on his debut. Reaping benefits from a straighter line and immaculate length, Ngidi was the best of South African bowlers on display and wrapped up India's innings with a 6/39.

On day 4, he had sent back the sensational Virat Kohli much to the agony of the visitors and he continued to pester India with his nagging line and length today. At 21, these are early days for Ngidi in Test cricket but going by his big heart and terrific performance here at Centurion, w cricket will see a lot of him in the coming months.
