2018 SA v India: South African national cricket team training session
Dale Steyn also overtook Harbhajan Singh

13 wickets fell on an engrossing first day of India's tour of South Africa. After winning the toss, the hosts elected to bat but were bowled out for 286 after they succumbed to Bhuvneshwar Kumar's early spell. Bhuvneshwar Kumar finished with a four-fer that helped India claim an advantage early before the South African pacers brought them back into the game.

India ended the day at 28/3 still 258 runs behind South Africa with all of Dale Steyn, Vernon Philander and Morne Morkel picking up a wicket.

Here are some interesting numbers from the first day's play:

0 - No fast bowler has had more caught and bowled dismissals in Tests than Dale Steyn. The Proteas pacer has 10 such dismissals, level with Richard Hadlee, which is a world record.

2 - This was only the second time in the last 10 years that 4 Indian pacers have taken a wicket in a Test innings. Before today, the last time was in Perth when Zaheer Khan, Umesh Yadav, Vinay Kumar and Ishant Sharma all picked up a wicket.

3 - This was south Africa's third-lowest score at the fall of 3rd wicket in the 1st innings of a Test. Against England in 1889. they scored 10 and at against India in 1992 they were 11. Only two times, they had scored lower than the 12 they managed in this Test.

4 - This was only the fourth time that India have taken a wicket before the opposition scored in the first match of an away Test series.

7 - Jasprit Bumrah became the seventh Indian player to make his Test debut in South Africa.

10 - Dale Steyn is now in 10th spot on the list of most wickets in Tests. He overtook Harbhajan Singh into 10th spot after claiming the wicket of Shikhar Dhawan.

10 - This was only the 10th time that India have bowled out the opposition on the first day of an away tour. It was only the second time that they have done it in South Africa, after 1996.

12 - The lowest score before which South Africa have had a century partnership for the fourth wicket. The previous lowest was 17 when Bob Catterall and Fred Susskind put on 112 against England at Lord's in 1924.

29 - The number of balls South Africa faced before losing their third wicket in the first innings of a Test. That is the fewest in the last 20 years.

2013 - The first time since 2013 that AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis have registered a fifty stand together in Tests. The last time was also against India, when they put on 205 while chasing in Johannesburg.
