A day after Badrinath's 38th birthday, Former India cricketer Subramaniam Badrinath announced his retirement from all forms of the game.

"This has certainly not been an easy decision, to be honest. I've been pondering over it. I've mentioned it to Mr. Kasi Viswanathan. Somehow my hand didn't go into penning the letter over the last year. I don't know why. But having turned 38 yesterday, I decided it was about the right time," Badrinath told reporters.

Speaking about his future plans and chance of taking up a coaching role, Badrinath, who was the head coach for TNPL side IDream Karaikudi Kaalai, ruled out taking charge of a first class team in the immediate future.

“As of now I want to spend time with my family. I am also a broadcaster now. Coaching the First-Class team is a long-term commitment of five to six months. But I am not ruling out anything in the future. An IPL role for two or three months is a good option and something I will look into.”

Badrinath was a middle-order batsman, who played two Tests, seven ODIs and a lone T20 international. He racked up 10,245 first-class runs from 145 games at an average of 54.49 including 32 centuries.

Badrinath found success with Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2011, making 396 runs in 13 innings as a floater, including five fifties and six not-outs, at an average of 56.57 and strike-rate of 127. All in all, he played 114 games for CSK between 2008 and 2013, scoring 1667 runs and winning back-to-back IPL titles with them in 2010 and 2011.

His former teammate Lakshimpathy Balaji heaped praise on him and recalled a game which he helped saved despite having spent some time in hospital owing to dehydration.

“I congratulate him on his wonderful career. I still remember the game he saved for TN despite being admitted to the hospital for dehydration. Such was his determination. Hats off to his courage and wonderful effort over the years,” Balaji said.
