Sundar Raman quits as IPL COO, BCCI accepts resignation within hours of submission

Sundar Raman is being investigated for his alleged involvement in the Spot-fixing scandal

Indian Premier League (IPL) Chief Operating Officer (COO) Sundar Raman has stepped down from his position, after being investigated for the 2013 corruption scandal, which rocked the cash-rich tournament. This will be the second major holistic pullout by a company or an individual within the IPL realm after PepsiCo exited last month.

A senior level BCCI official said, “The IPL governing council functions as a separate entity altogether, but this was a long time coming. After he was interrogated for the 2013 corruption scandal, most people thought he would step down earlier. A lot of people thought he was involved within the scandal. There is no shock within the BCCI regarding his departure. I am sure Mr Manohar didn’t think twice before accepting his resignation”

Raman met BCCI President Shashank Manohar on Monday, to submit his resignation, which was officially accepted today. Last month, Manohar had criticised the IPL governing council on not reprimanding Raman for his alleged involvement within the scandal. During a media interaction last month, Manohar said, “Raman should have stepped down immediately after the Mudgal Committee report was out. I don’t know why he is still a part of the IPL. For people to believe in the IPL again, Raman needs to go.”

The 43-year old administrator is still being investigated for his role in the spot-fixing and betting scandal.
