Youngsters who impressed in Asia Cup 2018
5 Mehidy Hasan:
Mehidy Hasan, the 20-year old from Bangladesh, has been the greatest find for them this Asia cup. He is a useful lower-order batsmen and was promoted to open the batting in the final and that worked as he, along with Liton Das, had a 120-run opening partnership. He has scored 110 runs in this Asia Cup.
He opens the bowling in the powerplay and keeps things tight as he does not give room to the batsmen, one of the reasons why he had an economy of 3.56 in this Asia cup, something that is excellent for a spinner who bowls in the powerplay. He had picked up 4 wickets in the tournament.
There had always been questions about Pakistan's top order. The introduction Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam had solved Pakistan's top order issue. Imam, the 22-year-old, had a superb Asia cup scoring 225 runs at an average of 56.25.
The 80 that he scored against Afghanistan and the 83 against Bangladesh were his excellent knocks, but unfortunately his 83 was not enough to take his side to the finals while the 80 against the Afghans helped Pakistan chase down 258. He is not a powerful modern day batsman rather is a classic batsman, who purely depends on his timing than brutal power.
The only area where he has work-on is his strike rate, he had a strike rate of 73.77 if he can improve his strike rate to around 85, then he will definitely be one of the best-limited overs batsmen.
3 Hashmatullah Shahidi:
There has always been a spotlight on Afghanistan's batting especially knowing the fact that they have a good solid bowling attack. Shahidi, the 23-year-old, along with Shahzad took Afghanistan to good totals in the tournament.
Shahidi happened to be the fifth highest run scorer of the Asia Cup 2018. His 97* and 71 against Pakistan and Bangladesh respectively were his best knocks but unfortunately, Afghanistan ended up on the losing side in both games.
Shahidi had scored three fifties in the tournament. Shahidi, like Imam, has a low strik- rate of 72.25 and that's the only area where he has to improve.
