Luis rules the tracks on 5th day of Hero MTB Himalaya

Rough terrain was the biggest problem for the contestants

After a much needed rest day on day 4 at Kullu Sarahan, the riders made a good start to the 4th stage of the race. The 5th day of the race known as The Cliffhanger takes the riders to an elevation gain of 2283m with a total elevation of over 5000m. Luis Leao Pinto won the 4th stage by a good minute and 3 seconds followed very closely by Andi Seewald and Pau Zamora behind Luis by 3 minutes 30 seconds.

In the competitive stage of 94kms, the steepest route is mid way where the riders gain an elevation o 500m in 13 kms. Primarily a mud track in this stage, 95% o the track is a jeep track with an average gradient of 4%.

The race was flagged from Kullu Sarahan with 59 riders lead by the overall leader of the previous 3 days – Luis Leao Pinto. In a surprising turn of events, the first reports of the riders at the end o the 7 km downhill track from Kullu Sarahan reported Guido Thaler in the lead followed very closely by Pa Zamora and Andi Seewald. It was reported that Luis has a flat tyre at the start of the race that lead to a delay with Luis Pinto coming in at the 1th position as reported by the first check point at Bagipul.

One of the riders slipped off the track into the low valley at the start of the race. He was evacuated by the rescue team and treated by the Fortis doctors.

Day 4 was a rest day or the riders so they could relax from the riding and loosen up. The riders were free to enjoy the local village hospitality at Kullu Sarahan. Some of the riders even participated in the school program conducted by Hero MTB Himalaya in association with UN Global Goals program. In the evening, a performance by the local musicians of Himachal Pradesh was arranged for the race participants as a cultural event, to give the riers a feel of the local cultures. .
