Rio Olympics 2016: Chinese duo get engaged after podium finish

Diver duo proposal
He Zi’s happiness doubled as she received a special gift moments after winning an Olympic medal

A few days ago, the world collectively gushed over the romantic proposal a Brazillian Rugby player received from her longtime girlfriend. Amidst everything negative that has been going on in the Olympic Games, this little slice of happiness that Isadora Cerullo, the rugby player received, brightened everyone's day. The same gesture has been repeated by two Chinese divers with a proposal that took place on the podium.

Moments after bagging the silver medal in the 3m Springboard event, China's He Zi received the surprise of her life after her boyfriend and national teammate greeted her with a marriage proposal while she was on the podium.

Qin Kai presented his girlfriend with a diamond ring which he rushed in with right after she received her silver medal. He also presented her with a glass-encased rose. Like He, Qin Kai is an Olympic medallist too, having won the bronze in his synchronised diving event last week.

“I didn't know he would propose today and I didn't expect myself to marry myself out so early,” He Zi told reporters after the incident. Clearly, she found it impossible to resist the charm of this impromptu act.

The couple have been together for six years, according to reports. For it to culminate into something so beautiful is definitely rewarding.

“I've forgotten most of what he said (during the proposal), but it's largely what you can expect like promises, but what touched me the most is that he said he was willing to be bullied by me for life," He Zi added.

The tale ended in happiness for both He and Qin as the latter flashed a thumbs-up at the adoring spectators to communicate that all was well.

The proposal took place at Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre in Rio. He Zi's teammate Shi Tingmao, as it turns out, already knew about Qin's plans. “They have passed through a lot of things over the last years, and this is the perfect moment to do this proposal. I am very happy for both of them,” she later told the media persons.

The bronze medallist in the respective event, Tania Cagnotto of Italy, also joined in the fun as she was informed by Shi about what lay in store for her teammate.

“Shi Tingmao knew about the surprise before the medal ceremony and told me, so I was informed. Anyway, it was a very nice moment,” Cagnotto said.

With the proposal accepted and their respective events over, the Chinese duo can look forward to a life filled with happiness, together.
