Players will have to choose four out of a total of 11 available heroes when they first begin Darkest Dungeon 2. Each one is briefly described below, with their quirks:

  • Highwayman: A pretty straightforward DPS unit. Can use both melee and ranged attacks, prefers the second position.
  • Man-at-Arms: This character is a walking tank, capable of shrugging off multiple hits. He is capable of generating block buffs and usually fights on the front lines.
  • Grave Robber: Best described as a general, all-purpose unit. The Grave Robber can fulfil multiple roles, including that of a DPS and support. May possibly fall off in late game where more specialized builds gain importance.
  • Plague Doctor: Probably the best hero in the game, largely thanks to his immense support capabilities. Can deal heavy damage to foes over time thanks to his debuff stacking, and can heal allies at will.
  • Hellion: Straight out of a medieval set piece, the Hellion deals higher damage with increased HP loss. Additionally, she can heal and reduce stress levels of her allies when in the party thanks to her skill.
  • Runaway: Built with a focus on stealth, the Runaway can avoid taking damage from most foes. Additionally, she can also deal damage over time thanks to her fire abilities.
  • Jester: The Jester is a unique addition to the party and constantly shuffles around the team. He is capable of absurdly high combo tokens, making him a worthwhile pick for early game scenarios.
  • Leper: The Leper is for all intents and purposes, a DPS tank. He is capable of dishing out heavy damage to foes as well as tanking hits that would ordinarily kill other party members. His only setback is Blindness stacking, which can be easily negated with the use of the Reflection ability.
  • Occultist: This hero can chain debuffs and combos on foes with precision, overlaid by an RNG mechanic.
  • Vestal: The Vestal has a potentially high skill ceiling, capable of learning the most effective curses in Darkest Dungeon 2. Mastering this hero is rather challenging but somewhat rewarding.
  • Bounty Hunter: The Bounty Hunter is a solid DPS overall, with fixed stats. He can be hired for four candles at the Inn. Additionally, it should be kept in mind that the Bounty Hunter is available until players reach the next Inn.
