Anthem: Should Bioware leave EA?

This 8th generation of console Era has seen quite ups and down when it comes to games and game developers.

Studios that we once loved dearly, and were considered some of the best around have lately delivered Mediocre games not just in terms of quality but also performance.

Last year's Fallout 76 was a major example of this. Bethesda Game Studio responsible for delivering four consecutive GOTY titles in the past generation struggled with Fallout 76 at Metacritic with a score of 52/100 at launch, making people go-"What were the developers thinking?"

The same could be said Bioware and EA's most anticipated Sci-fi MMO RPG Anthem which released today with a Metacritic score of 65/100. It's hard to imagine the same studio released the likes of Mass Effect and Dragon Age games back in the day which set benchmarks in the gaming industry through its incredible storytelling and characters.

So what exactly is the cause? Does all the GOTYs were just a mere coincide or the studios just completely lost it while making their most recent titles? I think neither is the case and for the most part, they are not even responsible.

Most likely it's their publishers that have been limiting their creative freedoms and forcing them to stick to a pattern that is considered "best for business" nowadays.

Yes indeed, online MMO titles make a lot of money and it seems like publishers like ZeniMax media and EA only care about this particular thing. Gone are the days when the quality of their titles even mattered to them because they are so very much blinded by this thirst to make money quickly. Hence limiting the capabilities of these talented bunch of people who are forced to make something that they are not good and the results show just that.

So the biggest question? How do we stop this? How do the companies we so dearly love continue to make games that we love rather than force us to like something which we don't want and is neither any good?

Well going independent seems to be the most logical answer.

Sure it's no easy task mind you, being a publisher and a developer is not a walk in the park.

But there are studios which are doing it and are doing it incredibly well.

The biggest example is CD Projekt RED. The studio is responsible for giving us one of the finest open-world RPG experience this generation with the like of The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt.

CD Projekt RED is one of the very few studios left around that still care what their fans want and continue to deliver a quality experience which the community deserves and it's all because they are independent.

Recently Bungie-the studio responsible for the likes of Halo split up with another big gaming publisher Activision in what seems to be the happiest gaming moment of this generation.

Bungie like the other studios were suffering the wrath of their publishers and was forced to meet deadlines and make games the way they didn't want to make and so they finally took the big step.

I think Bioware should do just that. Of course, it's difficult to say whether they would attain the rights to their popular franchises but maybe they will get the much needed fresh start they deserve?

Also splitting off with EA also doesn't necessarily mean they have to be independent. Imagine if Sony or Microsoft make them their first party developer? The creative freedom and time they would get would be incredible.

Of course, it's just a matter of opinion and many might disagree with my opinion. But think about it. Isn't it high time?

Anthem is out today on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
