Apex Legends News: Respawn assures that cross-platform play is on the way

One of the big issues in the gaming world these days is cross-platform gaming. Players playing, say, Fortnite on PC want to be able to play with those playing the game on the Nintendo Switch or PlayStation 4 and so on. Now that Sony has finally relented on the issue, and Microsoft is even giving both Switch and mobile game developers access to Xbox Live, it seems like cross-platform play (CPP) is moving to be the standard sooner than later.

Which brings us to Apex Legends, EA and Respawn's already-wildly popular team-based multiplayer shooter. The free-to-play game is already getting acclaim for it's easy to pick up gameplay as well as it's extremely polished state. And while it's playable on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, what it doesn't have is CPP between those formats.

In an interview with Eurogamer (H/T to GamesRadar), lead producer of the game at Respawn Drew McCoy assured us that this feature was still in works. "[We have] plans to allow players to play with their friends on other platforms," he stated, while also noting that cross-progression (basically bringing your characters and items from one platform to another) probably isn't going to happen.

There was also no news regarding a version for either mobile devices or the Switch. While he didn't outright deny those were in the works, he stated "there's nothing we can talk about" regarding them, either.

Considering that Legends more than likely went into production before CPP started to get traction in the gaming world, it makes sense that it's not something Respawn could put into the game at launch without having that launch delayed. EA and Respawn clearly have a marketing plan in play for this title, and it makes more sense to get it in the hands of as many gamers as possible, and then offer CPP.
