Cloud Imperium reveals more details on Star Citizen's mining feature

The Star Citizen Arena Commander module is now available for download

Spaceship simulators seem to be the trend now with the likes of Elite: Dangerous and Rebel Galaxy releasing recently. The latest title to join the spaceship simulator list is Cloud Imperium’s upcoming Star Citizen. There seems to be many similar features that these games share, one of which is the Mining feature. And the dev team for Star Citizen have now released an article detailing how the games mining option will work.

Mining is one of the many “occupations” present in Star Citizen. Players can mine items, though how good they are depends largely on their actual skill and equipment. This means that they can’t exploit magical stats and numbers. Mining will not be as mundane as it sounds though, with danger lurking in every corner. Whether it’s being attacked by space pirates, navigating dense asteroid fields or blowing up unstable material on an asteroid, the player will constantly be on the lookout when mining.

Players can choose to go freelance and keep the spoils or sign a contract, which guarantees a fixed amount of money when the goods are delivered. Players who are keen on mining can also purchase a mining ship to aid them. Titled the Orion, the ship is a huge 170 m in size with tons of space to store your cargo. The concept is now up for sale on the games site.

Mining cannot be performed alone however, as it comprises of a few distinct jobs. These posts are pilot, scanner operator, beam operator, cargo operator and refinery operator. Players can choose to team up with others or employ NPC’s to perform these jobs. NPC’s will come with a high monthly cost though, so it’s best to try and team up with pals if you’re thinking of taking up mining. You can read more about these mining jobs here.

Star Citizen is currently slated to release some time in 2016. The developers will be releasing the game in modules till then with the current playable module being the Arena Commander module. The developers revealed more about the games first-person module at PAX Australia last year, the details of which you can find here.
