Epic Games Store on PC might have a small security breach

Ever since Epic Games Store was released in December 2018, it has been throwing around free games and deals to compete with the giant that is Valve's Steam. Epic Games Store has even started offering many games which are exclusive to the store.

People didn't appreciate that as much as Epic thought they would. And now, Reddit user -dov- has found something that could be a security breach in the Epic Games Store.

While the problem doesn't seem to be huge, there does seem to be a security issue if a platform cannot verify your email address.

In the absence of email verification, spoofers can try to create a dummy account which mimics your email address, but without being in the same server as your original account (Gmail, Yahoo, etc.). They can then proceed to login to your account by trying to reset the password from your email. They could also log in to your Epic Store account by spoofing a password.

This is not a huge security breach, but something that has only been recently realized. Your account is more easily protected if they can't access your emails, plus Epic Games Store does have a two-factor authentication system which provides better security to the account, but caution still needs to be exercised when there is the possibility of dummy accounts being created.

The step might have been missed by Epic prior to first asking users to log into their accounts. Many people typically miss out on setting a two-factor authentication system completely.

Epic Games Store gained popularity thanks to its first exposure through Fortnite. Even though many long-time veterans have loyally stuck with Steam, the younger generation, who are just entering the gaming market, are giving Epic a chance. Fortnite has certainly helped with that. In such a scenario, it is important for Epic to uphold the highest security standards and preserve its audience - limited as it is.

It is hard to say or predict what might happen next. Steam offers many features with a wide game collection, and the platform still has a huge audience. Epic has fierce competition with Valve, who have even outshone EA's Origin and Ubisoft's Uplay.
