Final Fantasy XIV: Twitch Prime users can get the main game for free starting today

One of the few games left that use the old World of Warcraft-style "pay for the game and the expansions AND a monthly subscription" business model (there's probably a shorter version of that), Final Fantasy XIV has still seen quite of bit of success since relaunching as A Realm Reborn back in 2013. If you've been thinking of getting into the game and you're a subscriber to Twitch Prime, you're in for some pretty good news. (H/T Polygon)

Starting today, and ending May 3rd, subscribers can pick up the base title - and get a month of play - for free on Windows. The title usually costs $19.99, not including the expansions and all the other in-game transactions that this type of game usually has in it.

The main game will allow you to level up your character to level 50 and access all of the content before you hit the first expansion pack. This is a change from the usual free trial, which only gives players up to level 35. Once your 30 days is up, the usual subscription $12.99 a month ($14.99 a month if you're one of those players that like to have more than one character).

You'll also need to purchase the expansions on your own. This includes the upcoming Shadowbringers, which Square Enix announced yesterday will hit stores on July 2nd. There's also a special crossover event featuring Noctis from Final Fantasy XV that's coming in April. So, lots of good stuff to start getting into.

It's worth noting that, after the free trial, if you decide you can't keep the monthly subscription, your character will still be available if you decide to try again at a later date. So, it really is the perfect time to see if it's a game for you.
